Description
The Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP is the gun that built the company’s reputation, brought current with an optics cut. The P220 arrived in 1976, went on to serve police and military users worldwide, and has never really needed reinventing. What SIG has done instead is add the things a 2020s buyer expects: a milled slide for a red dot, SIGLITE night sights and the Short Reset Trigger. Part 220R-45-BSE-R2, UPC 798681697649.
A Different Kind of Forty-Five
Most .45 pistols on a dealer shelf are 1911 derivatives. The Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP is not. It is a double action / single action pistol with a decocking lever rather than a thumb safety: the first shot is a long, deliberate double-action press, and every shot after that is a short single-action break. There is no manual safety to forget, and the decocker lowers the hammer safely without touching the trigger.
The Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP slide is stainless steel machined from barstock and coated in Nitron, with cocking serrations front and rear. The frame is lightweight alloy with a beavertail and an accessory rail. Together they come in at 30.4 ounces, 7.4 inches long and 5.5 inches tall, with a 6.3-inch sight radius that is generous for a 4.4-inch barrel.
The Short Reset Trigger is the detail that converts sceptics. It cuts the distance the trigger must travel forward before it will fire again, which in practice means faster, more controllable follow-up shots in single action. Combined with the E2 grip, a one-piece polymer grip that reduces trigger reach compared with the older two-panel design, the Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP fits a far wider range of hands than a double-stack .45 ever could.

Optics and Sights
This is a P220 optic ready pistol, which is what separates it from the P220s that came before. The slide is cut for a DeltaPoint and RMR-pattern footprint, so a modern enclosed or open-emitter dot mounts directly without milling. For a hammer-fired .45 that is a meaningful upgrade: the sight picture sits above the bore on a gun with a long sight radius already, and ageing eyes stop being the limiting factor.
Underneath, SIGLITE night sights come fitted as standard. Tritium vials glow without any charging from a light source, which is the difference between fibre optic and tritium: fibre gathers ambient light and goes dark when there is none, tritium keeps working in a pitch-black room for the ten to twelve year life of the vials. The Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP therefore works with or without a dot, which matters if the optic battery dies.
Safeties on the Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP are SIG’s four-point system: the decocking lever, an automatic firing pin safety block, a safety intercept notch on the hammer and a trigger bar disconnector. None of them require a conscious action under stress.

Honest Caveats Before You Buy
Capacity is the obvious one. Eight rounds plus one is half what a modern double-stack 9mm carries, and .45 ACP costs noticeably more per round to practise with. If your priority is rounds on board and cheap training, this is not the pistol for you. The Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP is for shooters who want this cartridge in this action, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise.
The DA/SA trigger on the Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP needs work to master. Your first shot has a long, heavy pull and your second has a short, light one, and bridging that transition without dipping the muzzle takes real practice. Plenty of people buy a hammer gun, never train the double-action press, and conclude the pistol is inaccurate. It is not. Budget range time, not just ammunition.
The frame is aluminium alloy, not steel. That keeps weight at 30.4 ounces instead of the 40-odd a steel frame would add, but alloy frames have a finite service life measured in tens of thousands of rounds where a steel frame is effectively indefinite. For any realistic private owner this will never matter. For a high-volume competitor it might.
Two smaller notes. At 30.4 ounces this is a duty and range pistol rather than a comfortable all-day carry gun, and a good belt is not optional. And confirm your red dot footprint before ordering, because the optics cut on the Sig Sauer P220 R Elite 45 ACP takes DeltaPoint and RMR-pattern sights, so a Holosun K or Shield-footprint optic will need an adapter plate and will sit higher than it should.
Who it suits: shooters who prefer a hammer-fired pistol with a decocker over a striker gun, .45 ACP loyalists who never wanted a 1911, and anyone who wants SIGLITE night sights and an optics cut on a pistol with a genuine service record.
