Description
The Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 is SIG’s answer to the question every new AR buyer eventually asks: what else do I need? The answer here is a magazine and ammunition. Optic, light, foregrip and rail covers are already fitted, and the rifle underneath is the M400 SDI XSeries rather than a stripped base model. SIG part RM400-SDI-16B-R5FX, UPC 798681716128.
The Rifle Under the Package
Start with the barrel, because it is where a lot of budget ARs cut corners. The Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 uses a 16-inch chrome-moly barrel with a 1:7 twist running a mid-length gas system. Mid-length matters: it lowers port pressure compared with a carbine-length system, which means a softer impulse, slower wear on the bolt and extractor, and a rifle that is easier to shoot fast. Threads are 1/2×28 with a tapered shoulder under a SIG flash hider-compensator.
Controls on the Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 are fully ambidextrous. Safety, charging handle and bolt catch all work from either side, which is unusual at this price and genuinely useful for left-handed shooters or anyone shooting around barricades. The forend is free-floating M-LOK alloy, supplied with three rail covers and a vertical foregrip, and the stock is a six-position Magpul MOE-SL over a reduced-angle grip.
The trigger is the SIG Matchlite Duo trigger, a flat-blade two-stage unit. It has a defined first stage and a clean break rather than the long mushy pull of a mil-spec trigger, and on the Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 it is fitted from the factory instead of being an upgrade you pay for later.

The Optic and the Light
The optic mounted on the Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 is a ROMEO5 GenII red dot with a 1 MOA dot, MOTAC motion activation, an IPX7 waterproof rating and a claimed runtime past 40,000 hours. It is the sight most people would buy anyway at this tier, and having it zeroed on a co-witness height mount out of the box saves a separate purchase and a separate trip to the range.
The light is a FOXTROT-MSR weapon light in the full-size configuration, rated at 1,250 lumens and 33,000 candela. Those numbers matter in different ways: lumens is total output and fills a room, candela is intensity and reaches down a hallway or a treeline. At 33,000 candela the Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 has enough throw for realistic home-defence distances and then some.
Put together, the package weighs 8.0 pounds and measures 36.5 inches extended, 33.25 inches collapsed. That is heavier than a bare M400, and the weight is almost entirely the light, the foregrip and the optic. It is a fair trade for a rifle that is finished rather than a starting point.

Honest Caveats Before You Buy
One magazine. On a Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 at this price point a single 30-round magazine is thin, and you will want at least four more before a class or a serious range day. Factor that in when you compare the Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 against a bare rifle plus parts you choose yourself.
The bundled optic and light are good, not elite. A ROMEO5 GenII will hold zero and survive weather, but it is not night-vision compatible and it has no magnifier. The FOXTROT-MSR is bright and well made, but it ships without a pressure switch, so you are working the tailcap or a body button with your support hand. Shooters coming from a Surefire or Modlite will notice the difference; first-time buyers will not.
This is still direct impingement. Mid-length gas softens it, but gas and carbon go back into the receiver, and if you later add a suppressor expect more gas to the face unless you fit an adjustable gas block. That is a platform characteristic rather than a fault with the Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56.
Finally, weight and legality. Eight pounds before a loaded magazine and a sling is not light, and the Sig Sauer M400 Sentry 5.56 feels front-heavy with the light mounted forward. Check your state rules too, since a 30-round magazine and some of the features on an M400 SDI XSeries rifle are restricted in parts of the country. Pennsylvania buyers have nothing to worry about here.
Who it suits: first-time AR buyers who want one purchase and a rifle that is genuinely finished, home-defence users who need a weapon light and a red dot without researching either, and left-handed shooters who value fully ambidextrous controls.
