Description

The Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo is the same lightweight 300 WSM build as the Woodland version, finished in the pattern Savage designed for open, dry country rather than hardwoods. It runs a 20 inch carbon fiber wrapped stainless barrel, a Blackout Cerakote receiver and a synthetic stock with adjustable length of pull, at 6.78 pounds bare. The Savage item number is 32736 and the UPC is 011356327369. MAG5 Firearms lists it for western hunters, and the sections below cover what it does and where the limits sit.

Pattern, Weight and Purpose

Camouflage choice is not marketing noise on a rifle you carry at eye level all day. The savage western camo stock uses muted tans, greys and broken edges that sit down well against sage, scree and dry grass, where a green woodland pattern can read as a solid dark shape. If you hunt mule deer, antelope or elk in open bowls and above timber line, the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo is the more sensible of the two finishes.

Everything mechanical is shared with the rest of the Ultralite Pro line. The carbon fiber wrapped barrel is a stainless liner inside a carbon shell, which drops close to a pound against a steel sporter profile of the same contour. Twist is 1 in 10, which handles the 165 to 200 grain bullets 300 WSM shooters actually load. The muzzle is threaded 5 8 by 24 and an Omniport brake ships fitted, and a one piece 20 MOA rail is already on the receiver.

The stock is a synthetic shell rather than a hand laid composite, with a textured grip, a soft pad and spacers that set length of pull between 12.75 and 13.75 inches. It is slightly heavier and slightly less rigid than the carbon chassis on the Elite, and in exchange the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo costs roughly half as much. For a rifle that lives in a scabbard and gets dragged through rock, that is an easy call.

Shooting, Optics and Maintenance

As a 300 wsm lightweight rifle this is close to the sweet spot. Under seven pounds carries comfortably, and with the brake fitted the recoil is manageable enough that most shooters will not develop a flinch. Take the brake off and the honest magnum push returns. The brake is loud, so hearing protection is mandatory and a word of warning to whoever is on the next bench is simple courtesy. None of that is a criticism of the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo, it is simply the deal with braked magnums.

Optics choice matters more than usual here. Hanging a three pound scope on a 6.78 pound rifle throws away a large part of what you paid for, and a heavy scope also raises the bore line in a way that undoes the comb height. Something in the 20 to 26 ounce range with real elevation travel and repeatable turrets fits the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo well. Buy rings that match the 20 MOA base, because the base is a base and nothing more.

Carbon wrapped barrels need no special cleaning but they do need sensible handling. Do not clamp the carbon section in a vice, do not let solvent sit against the wrap, and do not expect the barrel to tolerate long strings just because it is light. Confirm zero on the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo in two or three round groups with cooling time. Treated that way, an accutrigger bolt action of this type will hold a cold bore zero across a season without complaint.

Who Should Buy It

Choose the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo if your hunting happens above timber line or across open sage and rock, if you want a light short magnum, and if you would rather put the saved money into glass. A Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo is the same rifle as the Woodland version underneath, so pick the pattern that matches the country you actually hunt. Full factory specifications are published by Savage Arms.

If you hunt hardwoods and dark timber, the Woodland camo version is the better match. If you shoot from a tripod and want an integrated ARCA rail with another half pound saved, look at the 110 Ultralite Elite V2. Anyone whose shots stay inside 300 yards should seriously consider a 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor instead and spend the difference on ammunition.

Two practical points about owning a Savage 110 Ultralite Pro Western Camo. Buy a spare AICS pattern magazine, because they are inexpensive and easy to lose in rough country. And plan for the 300 WSM to cost real money to shoot, so work up a single load, confirm it properly, and buy enough of that lot to hunt with for a couple of seasons rather than switching every trip.
