Description

The Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM is the sensible middle of the Savage lightweight range: you get the carbon fiber wrapped barrel and the short magnum chambering without paying for a machined chassis. This one wears the Savage Woodland camo synthetic stock, a Blackout Cerakote receiver and a 20 inch barrel, and it weighs 6.78 pounds bare. The Savage item number is 32714 and the UPC is 011356327147. MAG5 Firearms lists it for hunters who want a light magnum they will not be afraid to scratch.

Where the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM Sits

The important thing to understand is what this rifle shares with the more expensive models and what it does not. It shares the carbon fiber wrapped barrel over a stainless liner, the Blackout Cerakote receiver, the AICS pattern magazine, the one piece 20 MOA rail and the Omniport muzzle brake threaded 5 8 by 24. What it does not have is the carbon and magnesium chassis. Instead you get a synthetic stock, which is why the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM costs roughly half what the Elite does.

That synthetic stock is better than the word suggests. The woodland camo stock has a textured grip surface, a soft recoil pad and length of pull adjustable from 12.75 to 13.75 inches using spacers, so it can be fitted to a shooter rather than accepted as delivered. It is heavier and a little less rigid than a hand laid composite, which costs you about half a pound and a small amount of consistency under a loaded bipod. For a hunting rifle like the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM, that is a fair trade.

Underneath is an accutrigger bolt action built on the standard Savage 110 platform, adjustable by the owner between roughly 1.5 and 4 pounds without a gunsmith. Twist is 1 in 10, correct for the 165 to 200 grain bullets most 300 WSM shooters use. Overall length is 41.78 inches and capacity is three rounds in a detachable box magazine, which means spares are cheap and widely available from several makers.

In the Hand and on the Mountain

As a 300 wsm mountain rifle this hits the weight most people actually want. Under seven pounds bare is light enough to carry all day without turning into a chore, and heavy enough that the rifle does not become unmanageable when the brake is off or when you are shooting offhand. Balance on the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM with its 20 inch barrel is neutral rather than muzzle heavy, which is what you want when a shot comes quickly on a sidehill.

Recoil deserves a straight answer. With the Omniport brake fitted, a 300 WSM at this weight is comfortable for most adults and easy to shoot well from a rest. Take the brake off the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM and it is a genuine magnum push. The brake is also loud, and that is not a small detail at a covered range or beside a hunting partner. Hearing protection every time, and say something before you touch one off next to someone.

The carbon fiber wrapped barrel keeps weight down but it does not change how the barrel behaves once it is hot. Shoot the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM in two or three round groups with cooling time between them and it will give you honest, repeatable cold bore performance. Treat it like a range toy and groups will open up, which is true of every light barreled hunting rifle and not a fault of this one.

Who Should Buy It

Buy the Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM if you want a genuinely light short magnum for elk, moose or open country mule deer and you would rather spend the difference on glass than on a chassis. At roughly half the price of the Elite, this is the version most hunters should be looking at. Full factory specifications are published by Savage Arms.

Step up to the 110 Ultralite Elite V2 only if you actually shoot from a tripod and want the integrated ARCA rail and the extra half pound of weight saving. Step sideways to a 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor if your shots are closer and you want cheaper practice. Browse the rest of our rifles to compare.

Two ownership notes. First, a Savage 110 Ultralite Pro 300 WSM deserves a scope with real elevation travel and rings matched to the 20 MOA base, and the base is a base only, so budget rings separately. Second, buy a spare magazine. AICS pattern magazines are inexpensive, they are easy to drop in the dark, and a hunt is a poor time to discover you only own one.
