The Ruger LCP 380 ACP Pistol is the original modern pocket .380 and it is still the smallest sensible answer to the question of what you carry when you cannot carry anything. What a pocket .380 is actually for

• The Ruger LCP 380 ACP Pistol is the gun you carry when the alternative is carrying nothing. That is the entire argument and it is a good one – the best pistol in the world is no use in a safe at home
• Six rounds and a two-and-three-quarter-inch barrel are real limitations. Nobody buys this as their only handgun if they have a choice

Buy the holster with it

A Ruger LCP 380 ACP Pistol carried loose in a pocket is not carried safely – it turns, it collects lint in the trigger guard and it will not come out the same way twice. A pocket holster that covers the trigger and keeps the gun oriented costs very little and is not optional. Treat it as part of the purchase price.

Practise more than you think you need to

The Ruger LCP 380 ACP Pistol is harder to shoot than a large gun, and the LCP is at the far end of small. The long trigger and the minimal sights mean useful accuracy takes real practice, and practice is cheap in .380 – we stock CCI Blazer Brass 380 ACP 95gr in quantity.

Run at least a box of your chosen defensive load through it before you trust it. Short-barrelled pistols are the fussiest about feeding, and a load that works perfectly in a larger .380 may not cycle here. .380 ACP is standardised by SAAMI.

If you want more gun

The S&W Bodyguard 2.0 Comp holds twelve rounds of .380 in a package only slightly larger and has a ported barrel, and the Taurus GX4 Carry in .380 holds fifteen. Both are easier to shoot well. The LCP wins on size alone – if it is going in a pocket, nothing else is quite this flat.
