Description

A Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge weighs five pounds eight ounces. That number is the entire argument for this shotgun, and if you have ever finished a long day behind a dog wondering why your gun felt like it gained weight after lunch, it is an argument worth hearing.

What a Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge Gives You

Twenty gauge is the sweet spot for walking birds, and the Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge leans into it. The receiver is aluminum with no polymer parts inside, the 24 inch barrel is deep bore drilled rather than hammer forged, and the stock is Turkish walnut. Nothing about the gun is trying to be a do everything shotgun, and that focus is why it comes in so light.

The Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge action is inertia driven rather than gas operated, which is the right choice in a gun this size. Inertia systems have no gas piston to foul, nothing to scrub out after a wet day, and they save weight because the entire operating mechanism lives in the bolt. Retay calls their version Inertia Plus and uses a rollover torsion spring to positively rotate the bolt head into battery, so the gun does not get jarred out of lockup when it is slung or pushed through brush.

The Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge trigger group drops out at the push of a button with no tools, which makes cleaning a tailgate job instead of a bench job. It also means a shotgun stored with its trigger group removed cannot be fired, which is a genuine safety advantage in a house.

Recoil, Fit and What to Expect

Light guns kick, and a five and a half pound 20 gauge is no exception. Retay fits the AIRY pad, which uses an internal air pocket rather than solid rubber, and the forcing cone is lengthened at the factory to spread the pressure spike. With standard 2 3/4 inch upland loads a Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge is pleasant. With heavy 3 inch shells it will let you know.

Capacity on the Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge is 2+1, which is already plugged for migratory bird rules and is more than enough over a pointing dog. Sighting is a single fiber optic bead, which is exactly what you want on a gun that gets pointed rather than aimed. Five flush chokes ship in the box, covering cylinder through full.

A Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge has a 14.5 inch length of pull with a shim kit included, so drop and cast can be adjusted at home. Take the time. A light, fast gun shows up a poor fit far more quickly than a heavy one does, and twenty minutes with the shims will change how the gun shoots for you.

Who It Suits

Upland hunters who walk are the point of this gun. Grouse in the northwoods, woodcock in alder runs, quail in thorn, and any bird hunting where you carry the gun far more than you shoot it. A Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge exists so that carrying stops being the reason you quit early.

It is also an excellent choice for a smaller framed or younger shooter, given the caveat about recoil with heavy loads. Light field shells out of this gun are comfortable, the gun mounts easily, and the shim kit lets the stock be fitted properly rather than grown into.

Where it is the wrong gun is waterfowl or high volume clays. Two plus one is limiting, twenty gauge is not the caliber for big water, and a light gun is harder to swing smoothly across a hundred sporting targets. Retay builds the Ace and Gordion lines for those jobs.

A few practical notes before ordering a Retay Ace Upland Ultralight 20 Gauge. Fit the stock with the shim kit first, because it takes twenty minutes and changes everything. Break the action in with normal field loads rather than the lightest target shells, since inertia guns need recoil energy to cycle and very soft loads can be marginal in a new gun. Keep the choke wrench in your vest. And use the removable trigger group at the end of wet days, since field cleaning without a workbench is exactly why it is there.
