Description

The Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight is the rounded receiver version of Retay upland gun, and the difference is more than cosmetic. A streamlined alloy receiver profile sheds weight and softens the lines, which puts a 12 gauge semi automatic at 6.3 pounds with a 24 inch barrel and a Turkish walnut stock.

What the Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight Changes

The Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight receiver is the difference. Retay calls it a streamlined profile, and in practice it means the squared off lines of the standard Ace are rounded into something closer to a classic field gun. It looks better alongside walnut, and the alloy construction keeps the weight down without giving anything up mechanically.

Everything inside the Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight is the same well sorted package. The receiver is 100 percent aluminum with no polymer components, the barrel is deep bore drilled from straight stock rather than hammer forged, and the forcing cone is lengthened at the factory to spread the pressure spike and reduce pellet deformation.

The Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight action is inertia driven. The Inertia Plus bolt uses a rollover torsion spring to rotate the bolt head positively into battery, which is the fix for the old inertia gun complaint about being jarred out of lockup in the field. No gas system means nothing to foul and less to clean after a wet day.

Weight, Recoil and Setup

Six point three pounds in 12 gauge is genuinely light, and that is the entire argument for this gun. It is the difference between carrying a shotgun all day and noticing you are carrying a shotgun all day, which anyone who hunts behind a dog will recognize immediately.

Light guns kick, and this one is no exception. Retay fits the AIRY pad, which uses an internal air pocket rather than solid rubber, and claims up to thirty percent less felt recoil. With standard upland loads a Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight is comfortable. With heavy 3 inch shells you will know about it by the end of a box.

Five flush chokes ship in every Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight box, covering cylinder through full, and the sight is a single fiber optic bead. Capacity is 2+1, already plugged for migratory bird rules. Length of pull is 14.5 inches with a shim kit, and the trigger group comes out at the push of a button with no tools.

Who It Suits

Upland hunters who cover ground are the audience, and the ones who care how a gun looks doing it. A Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight is aimed at grouse in thick cover, sharptails on open prairie and pheasants in cut corn, and the rounded receiver makes it a gun you will not mind being photographed with.

It also works as a first semi automatic, with the caveat about recoil above. Light field loads are pleasant, the gun mounts easily, and the shim kit lets the stock be fitted properly rather than grown into.

Where it is the wrong tool is waterfowl or high volume clays. Two plus one is limiting outside upland use, and light guns are harder to swing smoothly across a hundred sporting targets. Retay builds the Ace and Gordion lines for those jobs.

A few practical notes before ordering a Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight. Fit the stock with the included shim kit before the first hunt, because a light gun rewards good fit and punishes a bad one quickly. Break the action in with reasonably stout field loads rather than the softest target shells, since inertia systems need recoil energy to cycle reliably when new. Keep a choke wrench in the vest. And use the removable trigger group at the end of wet days, since field cleaning without a bench is exactly why it is there.
