The LAP in the name stands for Light Armor Piercing, and it is not marketing. PMC X-Tac 5.56 NATO 62gr uses a boat tail full metal jacket bullet with a hardened steel penetrator seated in the tip, ahead of a lead rear core. That is the same construction as military M855, and it is why the tips are painted green.

The practical effect is penetration through hard intermediate barriers that a plain lead core 55 grain bullet will not defeat. Against soft targets the difference is less dramatic, and against modern body armor plates it is irrelevant. This is a barrier round, not a magic one.

It is brass cased and boxer primed, non corrosive, and loaded to full 5.56 NATO pressure rather than the milder 223 Remington spec. In a 5.56 or .223 Wylde chamber that means full velocity. Do not run it in a rifle marked 223 Remington only.

Honest notes before you buy

Steel core ammunition is banned at a great many indoor ranges and at most commercial ranges that use steel targets, because the penetrator damages backstops and plate. Call ahead. A case you cannot shoot anywhere convenient is a poor bargain.

It is also the wrong choice for steel target practice generally. The penetrator will crater and eventually punch through AR500 plate that handles lead core bullets without complaint, and replacing a plate costs more than the ammunition saved.

This is the important caveat. Green tip is not a defensive or hunting load. The steel penetrator drives straight through soft tissue with minimal expansion and severe overpenetration risk, which is exactly wrong inside a house. For defense buy a purpose built expanding load.
