Description
The NSI Heavy Field 12ga 8 Shot shell is a 12 gauge, 2-3/4 inch load with 1 1/4 oz of #8 lead shot at a rated 1220 fps. It comes 25 rounds per box. NSI is the brand of Nobel Sport Italia, a European maker of shotshells and ammunition components.
NSI Heavy Field 12ga 8 Shot Overview
NSI Heavy Field is a lead hunting load with a full 1-1/4 ounce payload. A heavier charge means more pellets in the pattern, which helps on tougher upland birds and small game where non-toxic shot is not required. It is a versatile choice for pheasants and rabbits, as well as doves and other game birds, and it can double as a heavy practice load.
How Heavy Field Works
Lead shot is dense and soft, so it carries energy well downrange and patterns predictably through standard chokes. The 1-1/4 ounce charge puts more pellets in the air than a typical one ounce field load. A one-piece wad protects the shot and helps keep patterns even, and Nobel Sport makes its own primers and powders for consistent ignition.
Shot Size and Use
#8 is a classic target size with a dense pattern for trap and skeet. #8 lead is a classic dove and quail size with a dense pattern for small, fast birds. Pattern your gun with this load, because every barrel and choke combination reacts a little differently.
Choke Notes
Improved cylinder or modified chokes suit most upland hunting, while a tighter choke helps on late-season birds that flush far out. Pattern the load with your gun before the season.
Chamber and Recoil
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns chambered for 2-3/4 inch shells or longer. Recoil is in line with other loads of this gauge and payload. A well-fitted gun, a good recoil pad and a consistent mount keep long days comfortable.
Rules and Regulations
Lead shot is not legal for waterfowl or on lands that require non-toxic shot. Check your state regulations, bag limits and any shot restrictions where you hunt.
Choosing the Right Load
For doves and quail, #7-1/2 or #8 gives a dense pattern for small birds. For pheasants, rabbits and other larger game, the heavier 1-1/4 ounce charge adds pellets and energy. Pick the size for the game you expect most, and pattern it before the season so you know how it performs.
Patterning Tips
Shoot a few shells at a large paper target from the distance you expect to shoot. Look at how evenly the pellets spread, check for gaps, and note where the center of the pattern lands compared with your point of aim. Trying more than one choke is the quickest way to find what works best with your gun.
