How the Hybrid Stack Works

Tungsten Super Shot changed turkey hunting because tungsten is roughly twice as dense as lead. A number 9 TSS pellet carries about the same energy as a number 5 lead pellet while being far smaller, which means you can put an enormous number of lethal pellets into the same payload weight. The problem is cost. Pure TSS shells run several dollars a round and a box of five can cost more than a case of duck loads.

A hybrid TSS turkey load splits the difference. Migra stacks roughly two hundred tungsten number 9 pellets together with nickel plated number 5 lead in the same two ounce payload. The tungsten does the work in the dense centre of the pattern where the head and neck need to be, and the lead fills out the charge at a fraction of the price per pellet. You are buying most of the performance for a good deal less money.

Nickel plating on the lead is not cosmetic. Plated pellets are harder and slide past each other more cleanly through the forcing cone and choke, so fewer deform and more stay in the pattern. In a turkey load, where everything depends on pattern density inside a ten inch circle at forty yards, that matters more than it does almost anywhere else.

At 1100 fps this is a deliberately slow shell. Turkey loads are not trying to reach out fast; they are trying to hold a dense pattern, and lower velocity means less pellet deformation and tighter patterns. Two ounces at any speed out of a 3 inch hull is a heavy load and it will let you know.

Honest Notes on Turkey Loads

Pattern it, and pattern it with the choke you will hunt. Turkey loads are the one case where patterning is genuinely non negotiable, because the whole question is how many pellets land in a ten inch circle at the distance you shoot. A dedicated turkey choke and Migra Hybrid Turkey 12ga 5 over 9 will behave differently from a factory full choke, and the only way to know your effective range is to put it on paper at thirty, forty and fifty yards.

Check your choke is rated for tungsten. TSS is much harder than lead and some older or thin walled aftermarket turkey chokes are not designed for it. Most modern turkey tubes are, but confirm with the choke maker before running a hybrid tungsten load through a tube you are unsure about.

Recoil is substantial and worth planning for. Two ounces out of a 3 inch hull kicks hard even at 1100 fps, and in a light turkey gun it is genuinely unpleasant. That is fine for the two or three shots a season most hunters fire, but do not plan on a long patterning session without a recoil pad or a shoulder that is ready for it.

Finally, know that five rounds is the box. Turkey ammunition is sold in small counts because nobody shoots much of it, but you should still budget two or three shells for patterning before the season. Buy two boxes rather than one if you are setting up a new gun or choke.

For pure tungsten performance Migra also builds a TSS turkey load, and we stock the Staxd Pheasant 4 over 6 and Field Lite stacked upland load from the same stacked shot family. Full details are on the Migra Hybrid Turkey page.
