Description
The Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall is a 3-9×40 hunting scope set up for straight wall cartridges generally rather than for one specific chambering, with an exposed elevation turret and a plain duplex reticle. The store title abbreviates it to SW, which tells a customer nothing, so we have spelled it out. Mag5 Firearms ships optics direct with no FFL transfer.

The Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall Is Not Tied to One Cartridge
Leupold also make versions of this scope dedicated to 350 Legend and to .450 Bushmaster, and we stock both. This one is the general straight wall model: same chassis, same exposed turret, not tied to a single load. If you shoot a 444 Marlin, a 45-70, a 12 gauge slug gun or anything else in that family, this is the one that fits without pretending to know your trajectory.
The exposed elevation turret is a finger click design at a quarter MOA, not a yardage engraved CDS dial. You will be counting clicks against your own dope rather than turning to a range number, which on a 200 yard cartridge is a perfectly sensible way to work. Write your numbers on tape and stick them to the stock.
That is not a shortcoming. An exposed finger click turret is simpler and has nothing to fail, and on a cartridge that is finished at 200 yards you will rarely turn it more than a handful of clicks. Just do not buy the Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall expecting a yardage dial, because that is a different model.
Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall Optics
Three to nine power through a 40mm objective on a one inch tube. Field of view at 100 yards is 33.1 feet at 3x and 13.6 feet at 9x, and eye relief runs 4.2 inches down to 3.7. That eye relief matters on this class of rifle: a 45-70 or a heavy slug load recoils hard, and a short eye relief scope will find your brow.
The reticle is a plain duplex in the second focal plane. No holdover ladder, which is correct for a scope that is not tied to one trajectory, and heavy outer posts that pull your eye to the centre when the light drops. Straight wall seasons tend to be late and grey.
If you hunt Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa or the shotgun zones of Pennsylvania, a straight wall rifle is very likely what you carry. The Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall is Leupold answer for that rifle in the most popular magnification range there is, without committing you to one chambering.
Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall Adjustment and Build
Quarter MOA clicks with 60 MOA of travel in elevation and 60 in windage. Parallax is fixed and set parallax free at 150 yards, which is at the far end of what most straight wall cartridges are used at, so the fixed setting works in your favour here. The Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall weighs 12.2 ounces and measures 12.49 inches.
Leupold describe this model as waterproof, fogproof and shockproof, which is slightly different wording from the 100 percent waterproof and fogproof phrasing they use on the other VX-Freedom pages. We have printed what they publish for this model rather than borrowing the phrase from a sibling.
Sixty MOA of elevation is generous for a cartridge that runs out of steam at 200 yards. It means the Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall will zero on almost any base you put it on, including bases that are not perfectly true, without eating into the adjustment you actually use.
The scope carries Leupold lifetime guarantee and is designed, machined and assembled in Oregon. Leupold publish no finish colour and no lens coating name for this model, so we have not listed either as a manufacturer figure even though the store title says black.
