Description

The Leupold VX-5HD 1-5×24 FireDot 4 Fine is item 183844, and it is unlike anything else in our Leupold rack in two ways. Its turrets are METRIC, and its reticle is the FireDot 4 Fine, not a FireDot Duplex.

Read this first: the Leupold VX-5HD 1-5×24 FireDot is a metric scope

Clicks are 1 cm at 100 metres. Not 1/4 MOA, not 0.1 MIL. The turrets move 80 cm per revolution. If you are used to counting minutes or mils, every zeroing session on this scope will be an arithmetic exercise until you retrain.

That is not a defect. It is a European-market configuration, and for a driven-game rifle zeroed once and left alone it barely matters. But it is the single most important thing the old title never said, and you should know it before the scope arrives.

The reticle is also worth getting right. Leupold publishes it as the Illum. FireDot 4 Fine. At least one retailer lists this UPC as a FireDot Duplex. It is not.

What the Leupold VX-5HD 1-5×24 FireDot is for

Field of view at 1x is 115.5 feet at 100 yards. That is the widest picture of any scope we carry by a long way, and it is the whole argument for this optic: both eyes open, tracking a moving animal, with an illuminated dot to aim with.

At 5x you still have 23.9 feet, which is enough for a deliberate shot out to a few hundred yards. At 15 ounces and 10.7 inches, the Leupold VX-5HD 1-5×24 FireDot is also light enough not to change how a fast-handling rifle balances.

Eight illumination settings run from a CR2032 through a push button, rated 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high. The illumination is rated daylight bright and explicitly not night vision compatible.

Turrets, and what this scope does not have

Both turrets on the Leupold VX-5HD 1-5×24 FireDot are pop-up rezero. There is NO locking dial and NO revolution indicator, alone among the Leupold scopes we stock. This is a set-and-forget scope, not one you dial for distance.

Total travel is generous at 524 cm at 100 metres, which works out to about 180 MOA or 52.4 MIL in both axes. The elevation dial travel limit is published as Total Scope Travel rather than as a figure.

No BDC dial is included and the manufacturer publishes Custom BDC Dial Compatible as an explicit No for this item. Unlike most of the range, there is no yardage dial to order later.

A parallax contradiction on the manufacturer page

The product page publishes both a fixed parallax-free distance of 150 yards and a minimum parallax-free distance of 50 yards, while also stating there is no side focus and no adjustable objective. A scope cannot be fixed at 150 and adjustable down to 50 at the same time.

With no side focus dial and no adjustable objective published, the fixed 150 yard figure is the one that makes physical sense. We are printing both and telling you which we would rely on rather than silently deleting the other.

Honest notes

This is a second focal plane scope, so the reticle keeps the same apparent size from 1x to 5x and the lit dot never shrinks away. That is what you want on a close-range rifle.

A 24 mm objective is small, and at 1x that is irrelevant. This is not a low-light glassing scope; the illumination exists to give you an aiming point, not to gather light.

No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published for this model, so we print none of the three. Mounting space is 6.8 inches, split 2.8 front and 2.2 rear, which is generous for a scope this short.

Who this scope suits

Driven hunts, dangerous game, thick timber, and anyone who shoots with both eyes open at close range. The Leupold VX-5HD 1-5×24 FireDot is waterproof, fogproof, engineered, machined and assembled in the USA and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you dial for distance, if you need a locking turret, or if metric click values are not something you want to learn.
