Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR1-MIL in 4.5-18×52 is item 183624, and it is the only illuminated Mark 4HD 4.5-18×52 of the three this shop carries. The other two have no battery in them at all.

Three Mark 4HD 4.5-18×52 scopes, and how to tell them apart

Item 183624, this scope, is the M5C3 turret clicking in 0.1 MIL with an illuminated PR-1MIL reticle. Item 183626 is the same M5C3 MIL scope with a PR2-MIL reticle and no illumination. Item 183625 is a different animal again: an M1C3 turret clicking in 1/4 MOA with a PR2-MOA reticle.

So the cluster splits two ways at once. First, MIL against MOA: the two M5C3 scopes click in milliradians, the M1C3 clicks in minutes. Second, illuminated against not: only this one has a lit reticle.

All three share the 34 mm main tube, the 52 mm objective, first focal plane glass and side focus down to 25 yards. Rings interchange freely across the three.

The illumination

Eight brightness settings run from a CR2032 through a push button, rated 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high. Leupold rates the illumination daylight bright.

The manufacturer does not publish a night vision compatibility row for this item, though it does publish one for the non-illuminated sibling. An absent row is not a stated answer, so we will not tell you either way. Ask Leupold if you intend to run a clip-on device.

Illumination matters more on a first focal plane scope than most buyers expect. At 4.5x the reticle is genuinely fine, and a lit centre is what makes the bottom of the zoom range usable in poor light.

Turrets and travel

Elevation on the Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR1-MIL is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Clicks are 0.1 MIL on both axes, matching the MIL reticle, so a correction read off the glass is dialled without conversion.

Total elevation travel is 36 MIL, which is 125 MOA or 360 cm at 100 metres, at 10 MIL per revolution with a 28.7 MIL dial travel limit. Windage gives 18 MIL, or 65 MOA, also at 10 MIL per turn.

Precision side focus adjusts parallax down to a 25 yard minimum, close enough to make the scope useful for rimfire practice as well as centrefire work at distance.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 4.5x to 18x behind a 52 mm objective. Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.9 at the top. Field of view is 23.1 feet at 4.5x and 5.2 feet at 18x, per 100 yards.

The scope measures 14.6 inches with 6.3 inches of mounting space, split 1.9 front and 2.1 rear, on a 5.1 inch objective section with a 2.4 inch bell.

Two published oddities we are not smoothing over

First, the weight. Leupold publishes 27 ounces for this illuminated scope and 27.5 ounces for the non-illuminated PR2-MIL version. An illumination module and a CR2032 do not make a scope lighter. One of the two figures is wrong and the manufacturer does not say which.

Second, the windage turret. The specification table for this item says Capped, while the description on the same page describes a ZeroLock windage adjustment, and both siblings publish Zero-Lock windage. We are reporting the spec row as published and telling you the page disagrees with itself.

Also worth knowing: no finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published for this model, and the page carries no focal plane row either, though the model name and reticle designation both say first focal plane.

Who this scope suits

Precision shooters working in MIL who want a lit reticle for low light, and anyone who has found a fine first focal plane crosshair hard to pick up at the bottom of the zoom. The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR1-MIL is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you think in MOA, if you would rather not carry a battery, or if the denser PR2 pattern suits you better than the PR1.
