The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm is a pistol-caliber carbine that folds in half at the receiver, which is a genuinely useful thing for a rifle to do. It takes Glock 20 magazines, weighs 5.6 pounds, and puts a full 16.15-inch barrel behind a cartridge most people only ever shoot from a four-inch pistol.

That last part is the reason to buy one. Ten-millimeter out of a carbine barrel picks up two to three hundred feet per second over the same load from a handgun, which moves it from a strong pistol round into genuinely capable territory on hogs, black bear and deer at sensible range.

Why the folding hinge matters

• The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm hinges at the receiver and folds the barrel back alongside the stock, so it stows in a pack or behind a truck seat.
• It cannot be fired folded, which is the safety answer and also the reason it is not an NFA item.
• Unfolded length runs 29.2 inches with the stock closed and 30.45 inches with it extended, so it is short even in use.

10mm Auto is a standardized cartridge, with pressure and dimensional limits published by SAAMI. Bear in mind that loads sold as “10mm” vary enormously in pressure, from soft target ammunition barely above 40 S&W to genuine woods loads. The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm handles the full range, but a blowback carbine is happier on full-power ammunition than on downloaded practice fodder, and light loads are the usual cause of short-stroking.

For the woods with the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm, Ultramax 240 gr hard-cast is the heavy penetrator most people carry in bear country. For everything else, Hornady Critical Duty 175 gr FlexLock is a well-behaved duty load that shoots to point of aim.

A note on the threaded muzzle: the thread pitch is listed because it is a specification of the rifle. MAG5 Firearms does not sell suppressors or other NFA items, and fitting one requires ATF approval and a tax stamp of your own. A thread protector ships on the barrel.

Setting one up

Most owners do three things to a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm and then leave it alone. The first is a red dot on the receiver rail, because the factory sights are functional rather than good and the rotating forend means an optic does not interfere with folding. A small-format dot keeps the folded package tidy; a large tube sight defeats the point of the rifle.

The second is a light on the M-LOK handguard, since a carbine kept for a cabin or a truck is far more likely to be picked up in the dark than at a range. The third is a sling, which the Sub-2000 needs more than most because it is awkward to carry by the handguard once a light is fitted.

Beyond that, keep it clean and keep it fed on full-power ammunition. A blowback action throws more fouling back into the receiver than a gas gun does, and a 10mm blowback throws a lot. Twenty minutes with a brush every few hundred rounds is the whole story, and the rifle strips without tools.

Why the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm earns its place

The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm is a simple blowback design, which means it is louder and shakes more than a gas gun, and the charging handle sits under the stock where it takes some getting used to. The sights are basic and most owners end up mounting a red dot within a month.

The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 10mm is also not a target rifle. Four inches at fifty yards is a realistic expectation with good ammunition, and that is entirely adequate for what it is: a compact, powerful, easily stored carbine for a truck, a boat, a cabin or a pack. If you already own a Glock 20, it is close to a default purchase.
