Hornady Critical Duty 10mm 175gr FlexLock – Potent Duty Load

$38.42

The highest energy load in Hornady’s Critical Duty line: a 175 grain FlexLock at 1160 fps for about 523 ft-lbs from a five inch barrel. The Flex Tip cannot clog in heavy clothing and the InterLock band holds jacket and core together through glass and steel. Built to the FBI protocol. 20 rounds per box.

Description

The Hornady Critical Duty 10mm 175gr FlexLock is the most powerful thing in the Critical Duty catalogue. A 175 grain FlexLock at 1160 fps carries about 523 ft-lbs, more than the 45 ACP version and well past anything a 9mm produces, and it is built to arrive intact after a barrier rather than only after open air.

Hornady Critical Duty 10mm 175gr FlexLock Overview

Hornady item 91256 loads a 175 grain FlexLock bullet to a nominal 1160 fps, producing roughly 523 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Twenty rounds per box.

Hornady publishes the full curve from a five inch test barrel: 1160 fps and 523 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 1061 fps and 437 ft-lbs at fifty yards, and 990 fps and 381 ft-lbs at a hundred. Still over 380 ft-lbs at a hundred yards is a rifle-like figure for a handgun cartridge.

The 10mm Auto was designed in the early 1980s to give a semi-automatic pistol 41 Magnum performance. It was briefly adopted by the FBI, judged too much for many agents, and downsized into the 40 S&W. Decades later the original cartridge has a devoted following, and this is the duty grade load for it.

The FBI protocol is a specific test sequence rather than a general endorsement. Ammunition is fired into calibrated gelatin bare, through heavy clothing, through steel, through wallboard, through plywood and through automotive glass at two angles, with expansion and penetration measured in every case. Performing well across all eight is genuinely hard to do.

10mm Duty Ammo Ballistics

At 1160 fps a 175 grain bullet produces about 523 ft-lbs, from grains times velocity squared divided by 450437. That is roughly thirteen percent more than the 220 grain 45 ACP load in the same line and about thirty eight percent more than the 124 grain 9mm.

Velocity retention is good. Losing 170 fps over a hundred yards leaves the bullet doing 990 fps, which is still comfortably inside the window where a FlexLock expands properly.

Recoil is the price. A 10mm at these numbers produces a sharp impulse that some shooters handle easily and others do not, and it is worth being honest with yourself about which group you are in before carrying it.

Sight regulation is worth confirming. A 175 grain bullet at 1160 fps prints differently from the 180 grain range loads most 10mm shooters practise with, and the gap is large enough to matter at any realistic distance.

Why The 175 Grain FlexLock Bullet Stays Intact

The FlexLock design answers two failure modes at once. A conventional hollow point driven through heavy clothing can pack its cavity with fabric and never open. Hornady fills the cavity with a soft polymer Flex Tip that cannot pack, and which is driven rearward on impact to begin expansion from the inside out.

The second failure mode is the jacket and core separating. That risk rises with velocity, which makes it especially relevant here. Hornady adds a mechanical InterLock band that grips the core and holds the two together, and that is where the weight retention comes from.

Barrier blind is the shorthand for the result. The bullet behaves much the same whether it reaches its target directly or through a windshield, a car door or an interior wall, and the FBI protocol exists to measure exactly that spread of conditions.

A 10mm has more to lose from a bullet coming apart than a slower cartridge does, because so much of its advantage is velocity. Holding a 175 grain bullet together at 1160 fps is what turns a high energy duty grade ammunition figure into penetration rather than a shallow crater.

Expansion is deliberately moderate rather than spectacular. Hornady designs for penetration depth first, which generally means a slightly narrower mushroom than a bullet tuned purely for bare gelatin, and a much better chance of reaching something important through an arm or a doorframe.

That is the whole brief for a barrier blind 10mm defense load: open when it should, stay in one piece when it is punished, and reach the depth it needs either way. The 175 grain FlexLock bullet is built around those three requirements and very little else.

Pistols That Suit This Barrier Blind 10mm Defense Load

Any pistol chambered in 10mm Auto in sound working order will handle this load. That covers the Glock 20, 29 and 40, the Sig P320-XTEN, the Springfield XD-M and 1911 models in 10mm, the Colt Delta Elite, the Smith & Wesson M&P 10mm and Kimber and Dan Wesson 10mm 1911s.

It also works in a 10mm carbine, where the longer barrel adds velocity and the recoil becomes very mild. That combination makes a surprisingly capable short range woods or home gun.

One caution specific to the cartridge: some 1911 pattern 10mm pistols were built with recoil springs tuned for softer loads. If yours has been running reduced power ammunition, check that a full power 10mm duty ammo load cycles and locks back properly before relying on it.

For anyone who carries a 10mm in bear country, note that this is a barrier blind 10mm defense load rather than a deep penetrating hard cast one. Against a large animal a non-expanding flat nose reaches further, and that is a different product.
