Description

The Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm is not a pistol in any shape you already recognize. It is a flat, machined aluminum body with a Picatinny rail running the full length of the top, a 9.6 inch threaded barrel, a stabilizing brace out of the back, and fifty rounds of 5.7x28mm lying flat along the body instead of stacked in the grip. That last detail is why the grip is no thicker than an ordinary pistol grip while the magazine holds fifty.

Kel-Tec has never been a company that builds the same gun as everyone else, and the Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm is the clearest example of that on our shelves. Two fifty-round magazines come in the box, which is unusual at any price.

What comes in the box with the Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm

  • Two 50-round 5.7x28mm magazines, both included by the factory.
  • The pistol itself with the stabilizing brace already fitted.
  • A 9.6 inch barrel, threaded at the muzzle, with a muzzle device installed as shown in the photographs.
  • No sights of any kind. Budget for an optic before you budget for ammunition.

How the Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm is built

  • Fully machined aluminum lower and a fully machined trigger group. Kel-Tec describes this gun as having minimal polymer components, which is not how most people picture the brand.
  • A trigger system derived from the SU-16 rifle rather than from a handgun.
  • A quick-disconnect field-strip system, so takedown does not need tools.
  • Ambidextrous safety.
  • A rear accessory mount that supports side-folding brace configurations.
  • A full-length Picatinny rail on top, and the receiver is drilled and tapped.
  • A B5 Systems grip, which is a real aftermarket grip rather than a molded afterthought.

Why the Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm earns its place

  • Fifty rounds without a reload, from something that is still legally a pistol.
  • 5.7x28mm is a light-recoiling cartridge. Out of a 9.6 inch barrel with a brace against your arm, this gun barely moves. New shooters who flinch at 9mm do not flinch at this.
  • Two magazines in the box means you are not buying a second one at fifty-round-magazine prices before you can shoot a proper session.
  • The full-length rail takes an optic, a light and a laser without an adapter, and the Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm needs the optic more than most guns do, because nothing is fitted.
  • It is genuinely interesting to shoot, and that matters more than any spec sheet line if the gun is going to leave the safe.

Now the honest part. This is a range gun and a home gun. It is long, it is wide and it will not conceal under anything, so do not buy the Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm expecting a carry pistol. Nothing is fitted for sighting, so the gun does not work out of the box until you mount something on the rail; a Picatinny-mounted reflex such as the Holosun HS510C suits the flat top of this gun better than a small pistol dot does.

Ammunition is the other honest point for anyone buying a Kel-Tec P50 5.7x28mm. 5.7x28mm is not a cartridge you will find in every shop, and it costs more per round than 9mm. We stock Fiocchi 5.7x28mm 40gr FMJ, which is the practice load; if you want a defensive load in this caliber you should tell us and we will source it, because stock across the industry moves. The cartridge fires a very light bullet very fast, and what it does at the far end is argued about honestly by people who know more than any listing can settle. Buy it because the gun shoots flat and pleasantly, not because someone told you the round is magic.

On the brace: this pistol is sold with a stabilizing brace fitted, and the federal rules around braces have been written, challenged in court and rewritten in recent years. That is not settled ground, and it is not something we will guess at for you. Fitting an actual shoulder stock, or shortening the barrel, would make this a short-barreled rifle under the National Firearms Act, which requires ATF approval; MAG5 does not sell NFA items. The threaded muzzle takes a muzzle device, and a suppressor on it would also be an NFA item requiring ATF approval, which again we do not sell.

Shipping restrictions on this SKU, straight from the distributor: no direct shipment to Rhode Island or Washington, and no sale into Illinois under PICA. Several other states restrict magazine capacity in a way that a fifty-round magazine plainly runs into, so tell us the destination when you order and we will check before we take your money rather than after.

If the format appeals but you want it in a different shape, we also stock the other KP50 configuration, the Kel-Tec R50 rifle built on the same fifty-round idea with a sixteen inch barrel, and the conventional Kel-Tec PR-57 if you want a normal-looking 5.7 handgun. The Smith and Wesson M&P 5.7 is the other serious option in the caliber.
