Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST – Great Modern Load

Description

The 7mm PRC is Hornady’s answer to a question the 7mm Remington Magnum never quite settled, which is how to get magnum velocity out of a modern, unbelted, efficiently shaped case. The Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST is the value hunting load for it, a polymer tipped SST at 3030 feet per second from a 24 inch barrel.

What the PRC case actually changes

No belt, a sharper shoulder and a case designed around long high ballistic coefficient bullets from the start. That geometry headspaces on the shoulder like a sensible modern cartridge, burns powder efficiently, and gives handloaders consistent brass life. The Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST benefits from all of it without you having to think about any of it.

Performance wise it lands very close to a 7mm Remington Magnum, which is the honest comparison. At 3030 feet per second and 3139 foot pounds the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST is within a whisker of the older cartridge. What it buys you is a better designed case and rifles throated for modern bullets.

Note the 24 inch test barrel. The 7mm PRC is a large capacity case and it wants barrel length to burn its powder. Out of a 20 or 22 inch barrel the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST will lose meaningful velocity, so check what your rifle has before you build a drop chart from the published number.

What it handles

Deer, antelope, black bear and elk within sensible range. The Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST has the energy for all of it and the trajectory for open country. Zero at 250 yards and you are close to point of aim at 300, with enough left at 400 to matter if you have done the work to shoot that far.

It is a particularly good match for a rifle with a fast twist barrel and a scope you can dial. The 7mm PRC was designed around exactly that setup, and the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST is the affordable way to get familiar with the rifle before spending premium money on match or bonded ammunition.

Honest notes before you buy

Recoil is real, similar to a 7mm Remington Magnum, which is to say noticeable but manageable in a rifle of sensible weight with a decent pad. Shoot in short strings from field positions rather than grinding through a box at a bench, and the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST will not build a flinch.

On bullet choice, the SST is a fast expanding hunting bullet and that is exactly right for deer and antelope. For elk at close range through heavy bone, a bonded bullet penetrates more reliably than the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST. Hornady sells those too. This is the load for deer sized game and for learning the rifle affordably.

The new cartridge problem

The 7mm PRC is recent, and that has a practical cost. Factory ammunition comes from a short list of makers and it is not stocked in every shop, particularly in a value line. If you own a rifle chambered for it, buying the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST when you find it is the sensible habit rather than assuming availability in October.

Brass and dies are readily available, which takes the sting out of it for handloaders. Save every case from the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST, because quality 7mm PRC brass is worth having and the unbelted shoulder headspacing means it lasts considerably longer than belted magnum brass does.

The bottom line

For a 7mm PRC owner who wants honest hunting ammunition without premium pricing, the Hornady Whitetail 7mm PRC 154gr SST is the sensible everyday box. You can read more about the bullet design at swiftbullets.com, or browse the rest of our stock on the MAG5 Firearms ammunition page.
