Hornady Critical Duty 45 ACP FlexLock – Dependable +P Duty Load

$35.90

Hornady’s heaviest duty load: a 220 grain FlexLock +P at 975 fps for about 464 ft-lbs from a five inch barrel. The Flex Tip cannot clog in heavy clothing and the InterLock band holds jacket and core together through glass and steel. Built to the FBI protocol. 25 rounds per box.

Description

The Hornady Critical Duty 45 ACP FlexLock is the heaviest bullet in the Critical Duty line and the one that leans hardest on the cartridge’s strengths. A 220 grain FlexLock at 975 fps carries about 464 ft-lbs, and because it is built to hold together through barriers, that mass is still working on the far side of a car door.

Hornady Critical Duty 45 ACP FlexLock Overview

Hornady item 90926 loads a 220 grain FlexLock bullet to +P pressure at a nominal 975 fps, producing roughly 464 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Twenty five rounds per box.

Hornady publishes the full curve from a five inch test barrel: 975 fps and 464 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 927 fps and 420 ft-lbs at fifty yards, and 887 fps and 384 ft-lbs at a hundred. A heavy slow bullet sheds velocity gently, and the numbers show it.

At 220 grains this is heavier than the standard 230 grain ball weight would suggest is possible at +P pressure, and Hornady gets there by keeping velocity modest and letting bullet construction do the work.

The FBI protocol is a specific sequence rather than a general endorsement. Ammunition is fired into calibrated gelatin bare, through heavy clothing, through steel, through wallboard, through plywood and through automotive glass at two angles, and expansion and penetration are measured in every case. Doing well across all eight is genuinely difficult.

45 ACP +P Duty Ammo Ballistics

At 975 fps a 220 grain bullet produces about 464 ft-lbs, from grains times velocity squared divided by 450437. That is the highest muzzle energy in the Critical Duty handgun line and about twenty two percent more than the 124 grain 9mm version generates.

Losing only 88 fps over a hundred yards is excellent retention. Heavy bullets carry their momentum well, and at a hundred yards this load still has more energy than most 9mm ammunition produces at the muzzle.

Recoil is a push rather than a snap. The 45 ACP has always been a low pressure cartridge moving a big bullet slowly, and even at +P a 220 grain bullet at 975 fps is comfortable in a steel framed pistol.

The trajectory is irrelevant at defensive distance and worth knowing anyway. A 45 ACP +P duty ammo load this heavy drops noticeably past fifty yards, which is well beyond any distance this round will realistically be used at.

Why The 220 Grain FlexLock Bullet Holds Together

The FlexLock design answers two failure modes at once. A conventional hollow point driven through heavy clothing can pack its cavity with fabric and never open. Hornady fills that cavity with a soft polymer Flex Tip, which cannot pack and is driven rearward on impact to start expansion from the inside out.

The second failure mode is the jacket and core separating. A bullet that hits automotive glass or sheet steel and sheds its core loses most of its ability to keep going. Hornady adds a mechanical InterLock band that grips the core, which is where the weight retention comes from.

That combination is what barrier blind describes. The bullet behaves much the same whether it reaches its target directly or through a windshield, a car door or an interior wall, and the FBI protocol exists precisely to measure that.

A 45 has an advantage here before the bullet design is even considered. It starts at 0.451 inches, so even a bullet that expands modestly after a barrier is still cutting a wide hole, and heavy 45 duty grade ammunition rarely lacks for frontal area.

Expansion is deliberately moderate rather than spectacular. Hornady designs for penetration depth first, which usually means a slightly narrower mushroom than a bullet built purely for bare gelatin figures, and a much better chance of reaching something important through an arm or a doorframe.

That is what a barrier blind 1911 defense load has to do: open when it should, stay in one piece when it is punished, and reach the depth it needs either way.

Pistols That Suit This Barrier Blind 1911 Defense Load

This is +P ammunition and belongs in a pistol rated for it. That covers the great majority of modern 45s: Government and Commander pattern 1911s from Colt, Springfield, Kimber, Dan Wesson and Wilson Combat, the Glock 21 and 30, the Sig P220, the Smith & Wesson M&P45 and the HK45.

Pistols not rated for +P, and older or lightweight guns in particular, should be fed standard pressure ammunition. If the manual does not mention +P, do not assume.

A 220 grain bullet is heavier than the 230 grain standard by only ten grains, so most 45s cycle it without any change of recoil spring. It is still worth running a magazine or two through your own pistol before carrying it.

Practise with it occasionally. A 220 grain FlexLock bullet at +P shoots to a different point of impact than a 230 grain ball load, and knowing where it lands from your own pistol is the point of buying a box.
