Description

The Henry H9 Protector Carbine is a short, serious 30-30 built for the space between a house and a treeline. Model H009PGR-3030 runs a 16.5 inch blued steel barrel threaded 5/8×24, holds five rounds, and wears American walnut with a checkered pistol grip. It measures 35.5 inches overall and weighs 6.75 pounds.

Henry named it the Protector for a reason. The Henry H9 Protector Carbine is shorter than the 20 inch lever guns it shares an action with, which makes it quicker in doorways and hallways, and the pistol grip gives a firmer hold than the straight grip on a traditional carbine. It is also drilled and tapped for a Weaver 63B mount, so an optic is a bolt-on job rather than a gunsmithing project.

Underneath it is a Henry: blued steel, real walnut, a transfer bar safety, a ventilated recoil pad and sling swivel studs fitted at the factory. Made in the United States, and backed by a lifetime guarantee that Henry actually honors.

Why a threaded 30-30 lever action makes sense

  • A threaded 30-30 lever action lets you fit a brake or a thread protector to a cartridge that has been around since 1895, which nobody offered for most of that time
  • 16.5 inches is genuinely short: it clears doorways and hallways that a 20 inch carbine fights with
  • 30-30 Winchester is available everywhere, cheap by centerfire standards, and entirely adequate inside 150 yards
  • The pistol grip gives a more positive hold than a straight stock when the rifle is held one-handed or braced
  • 6.75 pounds is light enough to carry and heavy enough that 30-30 recoil stays comfortable

The transfer bar safety rifle argument

A transfer bar safety rifle is safer to carry with a round chambered than a traditional lever gun is. On the older design the hammer rests on or near the firing pin and a sharp blow can set it off, which is why the half-cock notch exists and why careful owners carried an empty chamber. A transfer bar physically sits between the hammer and the firing pin and only rises into place when the trigger is pulled all the way through. Drop the rifle, and the hammer cannot reach the firing pin.

Henry has used this system across its lever guns for years and it is one of the quiet reasons these rifles are so widely recommended to first-time buyers. There is no cross-bolt button to find under stress and no safety to forget to disengage.

Threads, optics and what fits

The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, which is the standard pitch for 30-caliber rifles. Check the pitch stamped on any brake or adapter before ordering, because a 1/2-28 device from a 223 rifle will not start on these threads. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items such as suppressors or short-barreled rifles; a can on this thread would require ATF approval through a dealer who handles those transfers.

The receiver is drilled and tapped for a Weaver 63B base, so a scout scope or a red dot mounts without any machining. The factory irons are good enough to leave alone: an ivory bead front picks up fast against dark timber, and the semi-buckhorn rear is fully adjustable with the traditional white diamond under the notch.

Ammunition for the Henry H9 Protector Carbine

Flat-nose or round-nose bullets only. This is a tubular magazine, so the tip of one cartridge rests against the primer of the next. Pointed bullets are dangerous in a tube magazine and must never be used. Both loads we would recommend are correct: Federal 150 grain flat-nose JSP is the faster, flatter-shooting option, and Federal 170 grain round-nose JSP hits harder at close range and is the traditional brush load. We stock both very deep.

Out of a 16.5 inch barrel you will give up roughly 100 to 150 feet per second against a 20 inch rifle, which moves your practical range in a little but changes nothing inside 125 yards.

How it compares to the rest of the Henry 30-30 range

If you want the traditional 20 inch rifle with a side gate, the Henry Side Gate 30-30 in brass is the classic, and the Henry All Weather Side Gate trades walnut and blued steel for a hard chrome finish that ignores rain entirely. The Henry H9 Protector Carbine is the one to pick when length matters more than either. Full factory specifications are on the official Henry H9 Protector Carbine page.

Why this firearm earns its place

  • 16.5 inches and 6.75 pounds, which is as short as a 30-30 lever gun gets without paperwork
  • Threaded from the factory, which almost no traditional lever gun is
  • Transfer bar safety, so it is safe to carry with a full magazine and a chambered round
  • Drilled and tapped for a Weaver 63B mount, with good irons underneath
  • Made in the United States with real walnut and blued steel at a time when most competitors use birch and coatings

This suits the homeowner or rancher who wants a short, simple rifle behind a door, the hunter working thick timber where a 20 inch barrel snags, and anyone who wants a 30-30 that will take a modern muzzle device. It is not a long-range rifle and the short barrel costs a little velocity, which is the honest trade for the handiness.
