Description
The GSG-16 22LR Smoke Grey 10 Round carbine trades the usual black for an all-over smoke grey finish on the receiver, grip and stock, giving the classic subgun-style 22 rifle a subdued, modern look while keeping it inexpensive to shoot.
GSG-16 22LR Smoke Grey 10 Round Overview
German Sport Guns builds the GSG-16 and American Tactical imports it. This configuration (factory model GERGGSG1610S) ships with a single 10-round magazine and a 16.25-inch barrel inside a fixed muzzle extension, rifled at 1:16 for standard 22 LR bullets. You get adjustable iron sights, a Picatinny rail along the top for an optic, a slotted handguard for lights or a vertical grip, a two-position safety and a forward-mounted charging handle. Weight is close to 5.8 pounds, and length adjusts from about 28.5 to 34.25 inches with the collapsible stock.
Living With a Grey Finish
Grey is less flashy than a mint or pink rifle but more distinctive than plain black. It hides dust well and photographs nicely, though dark carbon fouling around the ejection port and muzzle will be more visible than on a black gun. Clean with a gentle solvent and wipe the exterior, and avoid harsh brake cleaners that can mottle applied finishes.
Range Performance
Recoil is negligible and muzzle rise is minimal, so follow-up shots are fast and new shooters stay relaxed. With a red dot it will keep hits on a small steel plate at 25 yards with decent ammunition, and the iron sights are good for informal shooting out to 50 yards. The rifle is a good companion for teaching sight picture, trigger control and safe magazine handling before stepping up to centerfire calibers.
Ammunition Notes
Feed it high-velocity round-nose 22 LR for best reliability. Subsonic and match loads may not cycle the blowback bolt every time, and cheap bulk packs sometimes produce duds that are a rimfire problem rather than a rifle problem. Keep the chamber and bolt face clean, because 22 LR is a dirty round and fouling builds quickly in semi-automatic rimfires. Pests and small game are possible at short range with good shot placement, but this is primarily a range rifle.
Muzzle and NFA Considerations
The cylinder at the end of the barrel is a dummy can that is permanently attached to bring the barrel to the legal 16-inch rifle minimum. It does not suppress sound. Removing it would create a short-barreled rifle under the NFA, and installing a real suppressor would require an approved ATF Form 4 and must be legal in your state.
Trade-Offs
The GSG-16 uses cast alloy and polymer components rather than stamped steel, and it is a blowback design rather than a copy of the original military mechanism, so most original-platform parts will not fit. The trigger is heavy for precision work. In exchange, you get a rugged-enough, low-cost carbine with a look that draws attention at the range and an easy manual of arms.
State Laws and Ownership
The 10-round magazine suits capacity-limited states, but collapsible stocks and other features may still be regulated where you live. Review state and local rules before you order, especially if you live in a state with an assault weapon feature test.
