Description
The GSG-16 22LR Black M-LOK 22 Round Rifle is the M-LOK handguard version of German Sport Guns’ MP5-style rimfire carbine, imported by American Tactical (ATI). It comes in black with a 16.25-inch barrel and a 22-round magazine, giving you more shooting between reloads than the 10-round models.
GSG-16 22LR Black M-LOK 22 Round Rifle Overview
Instead of the older quad-rail handguard, this GSG-16 uses a slimmer M-LOK handguard that is more comfortable to hold and lighter to carry, with slots for lights, hand stops and grips. Everything else follows the GSG-16 formula: straight blowback operation, a polymer receiver, adjustable MP5-style sights, a top Picatinny rail and a faux suppressor permanently attached over the barrel to meet the 16-inch minimum. That shroud is decorative only.
M-LOK Versus Quad Rail
Quad rails offer plenty of mounting space but can be sharp and bulky in the hand. The M-LOK handguard here is smoother and slimmer, and you only add rail sections where you need them. M-LOK accessories are widely available and usually lighter than Picatinny equivalents. If you already own Picatinny-mounted lights or lasers, you will need short M-LOK rail sections to attach them.
22-Round Capacity
The included 22-round magazine is long enough to look the part and keeps reload breaks short. GSG also sells 10-round and 110-round magazines for the GSG-16. Larger magazines are restricted or banned in some states, so check your local rules before ordering. Keep magazines clean and avoid dropping them on hard surfaces, because damaged feed lips are a common cause of malfunctions in rimfire carbines.
Shooting Characteristics
At about 5.84 pounds, the GSG-16 is light and nearly recoil-free. The collapsible stock adjusts overall length from about 28.5 to 34.25 inches and includes a storage compartment for small spare parts. The forward charging handle works with either hand. A 1-in-16 twist barrel suits common 36 to 40 grain bullets, and high-velocity round-nose ammunition gives the most reliable cycling.
Maintenance and Break-In
Plan on a break-in period of a few hundred rounds. Standard-velocity target ammunition and some bulk packs may not cycle reliably at first. Clean the chamber, bolt face and magazines after heavy use, since .22 LR leaves a lot of residue. Because the shroud cannot be removed, cleaning is done from the breech end with a flexible cable or rod guide.
Is It Right for You
The GSG-16 is a fun, affordable rimfire rather than a precision rifle. Expect plinking accuracy, basic fit and finish and modest resale value. The polymer receiver will not feel like a metal MP5 clone. If you want an inexpensive way to enjoy the MP5 look with modern M-LOK mounting and a 22-round magazine, it is an easy choice for range days.
State Laws and Ownership
Distributors list the GSG-16 as restricted in California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, and the 22-round magazine exceeds capacity limits in several of those states. Some localities also regulate adjustable stocks. Check your state and local laws before ordering, and confirm your receiving dealer can transfer it.
