Description
The Grizzly 470 Nitro 500gr TSX load, item GC47NE1, is a 5 round box of 470 Nitro Express ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 500 grain Barnes TSX solid copper hollow point bullet rated at 2150 fps with 5131 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Grizzly recommends it for safari hunting and big game.
Grizzly 470 Nitro 500gr TSX Overview
The 470 Nitro Express is one of the classic British double rifle cartridges and remains among the most popular choices for hunting Cape buffalo, elephant and other dangerous game. This Grizzly load pairs a 500 grain Barnes TSX with a rated 2150 fps and 5131 foot-pounds of energy, the traditional 470 ballistics that most double rifles are regulated for. The TSX is an expanding monolithic bullet, making this load a strong first-barrel choice on buffalo, with a solid typically loaded in the second barrel.
Bullet Design
The Barnes TSX is a solid copper hollow point. On impact the nose opens into sharp copper petals while the shank holds together, so the bullet typically retains nearly all of its weight and penetrates deeply. Because it contains no lead core, it cannot separate the way some cup-and-core bullets can, which makes it a trusted first-shot bullet for Cape buffalo and other dangerous game.
Intended Use
Grizzly recommends this load for safari hunting and big game. The 500 grain TSX is well suited to Cape buffalo, lion and large plains game, where controlled expansion and deep penetration are both needed. For elephant and frontal brain shots, a solid is the better choice. Always confirm legal requirements and bullet preferences with your outfitter and professional hunter.
Firearm Compatibility
This ammunition is made for double rifles and bolt-action rifles chambered in 470 Nitro Express. Double rifles are regulated to shoot a specific load to the same point of aim from both barrels, so confirm regulation with this ammunition before a hunt. Do not fire it in a 470 Capstick, 475 Nitro Express or any other chambering.
Grizzly Cartridge Company
Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.
Recoil and Shootability
The 470 Nitro Express produces very heavy recoil, which is why rifles in this chambering are heavy and carefully stocked. Practice with both barrels from shooting sticks before your hunt.
Practice and Testing
Fire enough rounds through your own rifle before a hunt to confirm reliable function and to check where this load prints at the distances you expect to shoot. With a double rifle, confirm that both barrels regulate to the same point of aim. Practice from shooting sticks and field positions, since dangerous game shots are often taken quickly at close range.
Storage and Care
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading, and carry spare rounds in a cartridge belt or holder that protects them from dust and moisture.
