Description
The Grizzly 458 Win Mag 500gr Solid load, item GC458WM5, is a 5 round box of 458 Winchester Magnum ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 500 grain solid bullet rated at 2100 fps with 4896 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Grizzly recommends it for safari hunting and big game.
Grizzly 458 Win Mag 500gr Solid Overview
Introduced by Winchester in 1956, the 458 Winchester Magnum brought true dangerous game power to a standard-length bolt action and became one of the most widely used elephant and buffalo cartridges in Africa. This Grizzly load fires a 500 grain solid at a rated 2100 fps with 4896 foot-pounds of energy, the classic 458 formula. Solids are the standard choice for elephant and for follow-up shots on Cape buffalo, where straight-line penetration through heavy bone is essential.
Bullet Design
A solid is a non-expanding, homogeneous metal bullet built for the largest dangerous game, such as elephant, Cape buffalo and hippo. It is designed to hold its shape and drive in a straight line through heavy bone and thick muscle, which is exactly what is needed for frontal brain shots and follow-up shots on dangerous animals. Many hunters carry solids alongside an expanding load for their first shot.
Intended Use
Grizzly recommends this load for safari hunting and big game. Solids are intended for elephant, buffalo, hippo and other thick-skinned dangerous game, and for finishing shots. For plains game, an expanding bullet is the better choice. Always confirm legal caliber and energy minimums with your outfitter and the country where you hunt.
Firearm Compatibility
This ammunition is made for rifles chambered in 458 Winchester Magnum, and it can also be fired in rifles chambered for 458 Lott. Do not fire it in any other 45 caliber rifle chamber, such as the 450 Rigby, 450 Dakota or 458 SOCOM.
Grizzly Cartridge Company
Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.
Recoil and Shootability
A 500 grain bullet from the 458 Winchester Magnum produces very heavy recoil. A heavy rifle with a good recoil pad, correct stock fit and practice from shooting sticks are essential before a dangerous game hunt.
Practice and Testing
Fire enough rounds through your own rifle before a hunt to confirm reliable feeding and extraction and to check where this load prints at the distances you expect to shoot. Practice from shooting sticks and field positions, not only from the bench, since dangerous game shots are often taken quickly at close range.
Storage and Care
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading, and carry spare rounds in a cartridge holder that protects them from dust and moisture.
