Description
The Grizzly 44 Special 240gr JHP load, item GC44SP5, is a 20 round box of 44 Special ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 240 grain jacketed hollow point bullet rated at 950 fps with 481 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Grizzly recommends it for shooting and self defense.
Grizzly 44 Special 240gr JHP Overview
The 44 Special has earned a loyal following as a big-bore defensive revolver cartridge with far less recoil than a 44 Magnum. This Grizzly load pairs a heavy 240 grain jacketed hollow point with a rated 950 fps and 481 foot-pounds of energy. That combination starts with a wide, heavy bullet and adds expansion, which is why many experienced shooters trust the 44 Special for personal protection. It also serves as a softer practice load for 44 Magnum revolver owners.
Bullet Design
A jacketed hollow point opens up on impact, increasing its frontal area and transferring energy to the target while limiting over-penetration compared with solid bullets. A heavy 240 grain 44 caliber hollow point starts out large and expands further, creating a wide wound channel even at the moderate speeds of the 44 Special.
Intended Use
Grizzly lists this load for shooting and self-defense. It suits concealed carry and home defense with 44 Special revolvers, and it is a practical, lighter-recoiling option for 44 Magnum revolvers. For hunting or protection against large animals, a heavier hard cast 44 Magnum load is a better choice.
Firearm Compatibility
This ammunition is made for revolvers chambered in 44 Special, and it can also be fired in any 44 Magnum revolver or rifle. Popular 44 Special revolvers include the Charter Arms Bulldog, the Smith and Wesson Model 24 and 624, the Ruger GP100 and Super Blackhawk Bisley in 44 Special, and Colt-style single actions. Do not fire it in a 44-40, 44 Russian or 44 Auto Mag firearm.
Grizzly Cartridge Company
Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.
Recoil and Shootability
The 44 Special is known for moderate recoil that is easy to control in a medium or large frame revolver. In a lightweight five-shot revolver such as the Bulldog it is snappier but still manageable, which makes it a comfortable choice for defense and practice.
Practice and Testing
Fire at least a box through your own firearm before you rely on this load for hunting, competition or protection. Confirm reliable feeding and extraction, and check where it prints at the distances you expect to shoot, since heavy or fast loads often hit to a different point than light practice ammunition.
Storage and Care
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading.
