Description
The Grizzly 38 Special 158gr Cowboy RNFP load, item GC38SP8, is a 50 round box of 38 Special ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 158 grain lead round nose flat point (Cowboy) bullet rated at 900 fps with 284 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Grizzly recommends it for target shooting.
Grizzly 38 Special 158gr Cowboy RNFP Overview
The 158 grain lead round nose flat point is the classic cowboy action load for 38 Special, and Grizzly loads it at a mild 900 fps with 284 foot-pounds of energy. The flat-tipped profile makes it one of the most reliable choices for lever-action rifles, so one box can feed both a single action revolver and a lever gun on the same stage. A 50 round box covers a full match or a solid practice session.
Bullet Design
Grizzly’s Cowboy loads use lead bullets at moderate speeds for target shooting and cowboy action matches. A round nose flat point profile feeds smoothly through revolver cylinders and lever-action carriers, and the flat tip is safe in tubular magazines where the bullet of one round rests against the primer of the next. Soft lead is gentle on steel targets and bores.
Intended Use
Grizzly lists this as a target shooting load. It is ideal for cowboy action and SASS-style matches, steel plate shooting and relaxed plinking with revolvers and lever-action rifles. Many clubs set velocity and bullet rules for cowboy matches, so check your match rules before competing. It is not intended for hunting or self-defense.
Firearm Compatibility
This ammunition is made for revolvers and lever-action rifles chambered in 38 Special, and it can also be fired in any 357 Magnum revolver or rifle. It suits single action revolvers such as the Ruger Vaquero and Uberti and Pietta Colt-style replicas, double action revolvers from Smith and Wesson, Ruger and Taurus, and 357/38 lever guns from Henry, Marlin, Rossi and Uberti used in cowboy action shooting.
Grizzly Cartridge Company
Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.
Recoil and Shootability
At 900 fps, this 38 Special load has very light recoil, especially from a steel-frame revolver or a lever-action rifle. That makes it comfortable for long cowboy action stages and for newer shooters learning revolver and lever-gun fundamentals.
Practice and Testing
Fire at least a box through your own firearm before you rely on this load for hunting, competition or protection. Confirm reliable feeding and extraction, and check where it prints at the distances you expect to shoot, since heavy or fast loads often hit to a different point than light practice ammunition.
Storage and Care
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading.
