Description
The Glock 19 Gen 6 Compact Pistol is the sixth generation of the most widely carried handgun in the world. The size has not changed and it did not need to – a 4.02-inch barrel, fifteen rounds and a grip short enough to conceal is the compromise that made the G19 what it is.
What Generation 6 adds is the two things owners of the previous ones kept paying gunsmiths for: a slide cut for a red dot from the factory, and controls that work from either hand.

What the Glock 19 Gen 6 Compact Pistol is
- 9mm Luger, 15+1 capacity
- 4.02-inch black Glock Marksman Barrel
- Black nDLC steel slide, optic ready, front and rear serrations
- Black polymer compact frame with an accessory rail
- Interchangeable backstraps
- Ambidextrous controls
- Striker fired with the Safe Action trigger system

What changed, and what did not
- The Glock 19 Gen 6 Compact Pistol slide arrives cut for a micro red dot with a cover plate fitted. On previous generations this was a two hundred dollar milling job and a two week wait
- Controls are ambidextrous. If you are left handed this is the difference between running the pistol properly and working around it; if you are right handed it costs you nothing and helps with one-handed drills
- The dimensions are unchanged, so every G19 holster, magazine and light you already own still fits
- The trigger is still the Safe Action trigger. It is consistent and reliable and it is not crisp – that has never been what the platform is about
- Fifteen rounds in a grip most people can conceal is still the reason this pistol outsells everything else

Before you buy a red dot
Micro red dot footprints are not standardised between manufacturers. Check the mounting pattern of the optic you want against the plate set supplied with the pistol rather than assuming it will fit – the wrong choice costs you either an adapter plate, which raises the optic and eats into the window, or a return.
A dot also sits higher than iron sights, so plan on suppressor-height or at least co-witness irons at the same time. And the cover plate means the gun works perfectly well on irons alone if you never fit one.
Why the G19 size keeps winning
The Glock 19 Gen 6 Compact Pistol is big enough to shoot properly and small enough to carry every day, and almost nothing else manages both. A full-size pistol shoots slightly better and gets left at home; a subcompact carries better and is harder to shoot well. The compact sits in the middle and that is the whole argument.
The practical consequence is the ecosystem. More holsters, magazines, sights, lights and parts are made for this one size of handgun than for any other, which means whatever you want to do with it, somebody already makes the part.
Ammunition
9mm Luger is standardised by SAAMI. A 4.02-inch barrel is squarely in the range defensive loads are designed and tested around, so published velocity figures apply rather than the reduced ones a subcompact produces. For practice, Federal Champion 115gr FMJ is the sensible bulk choice, and an IWB holster cut for an optic is worth buying at the same time.
The rest of the Gen 6 line
The full-size version is the Glock 17 Gen 6, and the crossover – a full-length grip under this same slide length – is the Glock 45 Gen 6. In coyote, the Glock 19X V is the earlier crossover without the optic cut.
Why the Glock 19 Gen 6 Compact Pistol earns its place
- The Glock 19 Gen 6 Compact Pistol is optic ready from the factory, which is the upgrade most G19 owners eventually pay for anyway
- Ambidextrous controls at no extra cost
- Identical dimensions to earlier G19s, so your existing holsters and magazines carry over
- The largest support ecosystem of any handgun made
- The deepest stock position in the shop
Be honest about the trigger. The Safe Action trigger is a working trigger – long, consistent, utterly dependable and not remotely crisp. People who want a crisp break fit an aftermarket trigger or buy something else, and both are reasonable.
The grip angle is the other thing that divides people, and no amount of reading settles it. If you have shot a Glock you already know which camp you are in.
What is not in question is whether it will work. That is what this platform is bought for and it is why the Glock 19 Gen 6 Compact Pistol will be on more belts than anything else again this year. MAG5 Firearms ships to your FFL.
