Description
The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 Elite OD Green is a compact 9mm AR-style pistol with a roughly 4-inch barrel, built by Freedom Ordnance in the USA and upgraded from the standard FX-9 with an ambidextrous charging handle, B5 Systems furniture, an angled foregrip and an SB Tactical brace, all in an OD Green anodized finish.

Freedom Ordnance FX-9 Elite OD Green Overview
The FX-9 is a straight blowback 9mm that feeds from Glock-type magazines, so the same magazines you run in a Glock 17 or 19 work here. Freedom Ordnance machines the receivers from billet aluminum with Type III anodizing and nitrides the barrel, bolt, extractor, ejector, feed ramp and last-round hold open. This Elite model (FX9P4E-ODG) adds a redesigned M-LOK rail that uses a BCM barrel nut, a B5 Systems grip, the ambidextrous Warhammer charging handle, Freedom’s Elite flash hider on a 1/2×28 threaded barrel, and an angled foregrip with a finger stop.
Size and Handling
Distributors list the barrel at 4 to about 4.45 inches. Freedom Ordnance lists the standard 4-inch FX-9 with an SBA3 brace at roughly 18.75 to 21.25 inches long and about 4.5 pounds without a magazine; the Elite’s SBA5 brace and added parts change those figures slightly. That makes it one of the shortest PCC-style pistols available, easy to store and maneuver indoors. The trade-off of such a short barrel is more muzzle flash and blast and less velocity than a carbine, so pick ammunition that performs well from short barrels.

Controls and Brace
Controls follow the AR-15 pattern: a familiar safety selector, AR pistol grip and rear charging handle, with a proprietary AR-style magazine release. The Warhammer handle can be worked from either side. The SBA5 brace slides on the pistol buffer tube and adjusts for length. Brace rules have changed several times since ATF’s 2023 rule, which courts vacated, so check current federal and state guidance before buying or modifying it. Installing a shoulder stock on a barrel this short creates an NFA short-barreled rifle that requires an approved ATF Form 1.
Magazines and Ammunition
Glock-type magazine compatibility is a big advantage, since 17, 33 and drum magazines are widely available. Distributor listings disagree on the included magazine, describing it as 31 or 32 rounds; Freedom Ordnance says it ships a standard capacity magazine or whatever is compliant for your state. Freedom recommends 115 grain FMJ for practice and quality jacketed hollow points, and warns against aluminum-case ammunition, reloads and unjacketed lead, which can damage the gun or void the warranty.

Blowback Operation
Straight blowback is simple and reliable, but it uses a heavier bolt and buffer to stay closed, so recoil feels sharper than a 9mm handgun suggests and the action is dirtier than a roller-delayed design. Freedom notes that a JP silent buffer system will damage the FX-9 upper and recommends keeping the factory trigger group, which has extra disconnector engagement for blowback timing. Plan to clean the bolt face and chamber more often than on a gas-operated rifle.
OD Green Finish and Value
The OD Green anodizing gives the Elite a distinct military look, and anodized colors resist wear better than painted finishes, though shades vary slightly by batch and lighting. The FX-9 carries a limited lifetime warranty from Freedom Ordnance. Compared with premium PCC pistols it offers strong value and Glock magazine compatibility, though resale value is lower than better-known brands and some aftermarket parts are FX-9 specific.
State Laws and Ownership
Several states restrict AR-style pistols, braces, threaded barrels or magazines over 10 or 15 rounds, and some ban the FX-9 configuration outright. Pennsylvania currently allows braced 9mm pistols with standard capacity magazines. Your receiving dealer must confirm the pistol and its magazine can legally transfer to you. Check your state and local laws before ordering.
