Description
The Fort Scott 762×39 117gr TUI load is a 20 round box of 7.62x39mm ammunition from Fort Scott Munitions, an American company in Fort Scott, Kansas. It uses a 117 grain Solid Copper Spun (SCS) bullet with the company’s Tumble Upon Impact design, and Fort Scott lists a test velocity of 2,336 fps from a 20 inch barrel with a 1:9.45 twist.

Fort Scott 762×39 117gr TUI Overview
The 7.62x39mm is best known as the cartridge of AK-pattern rifles and SKS carbines, and it has also become a capable short-range deer and hog round in rifles such as the Ruger American and Mini-30. Most 7.62×39 ammunition is inexpensive steel-cased full metal jacket, which is fine for plinking but poor for hunting. Fort Scott’s load uses a 117 grain solid copper bullet, tested at 2,336 fps from a 20 inch barrel, that tumbles after impact for a larger wound path while staying intact. It turns an affordable plinker cartridge into a credible lead-free hunting and defensive load.
How TUI Works
Fort Scott’s patented Tumble Upon Impact (TUI) design works differently from an expanding hunting bullet. Rather than mushrooming, the lathe-turned copper bullet is engineered so it begins to yaw and tumble shortly after it enters a target. A tumbling bullet presents its full length as it travels, creating a large wound channel while retaining its weight because it does not fragment or shed petals. That means deep, consistent penetration and no lead fragments in game meat.

Non-Lead Construction
Because the bullet is a single piece of copper turned on a lathe, it contains no lead core. That makes it compliant in areas that restrict lead ammunition for hunting and reduces lead exposure at the range. Monolithic bullets are longer than lead-core bullets of the same weight, so Fort Scott tunes seating depth and powder charge for each load.
Firearm Compatibility
Fire this ammunition in firearms chambered for 7.62x39mm, including AK-pattern rifles, SKS carbines, AR-15s built for the round and bolt-action rifles. Note that most 7.62×39 bores measure about .310 to .312 inch; Fort Scott designs its bullet for the cartridge, but accuracy can vary between rifles, so test before hunting. Do not use it in 7.62×51 NATO, 308 Winchester or 7.62x54R rifles.

Accuracy and Testing
Every rifle has its own preferences. Before you hunt with this load, fire several groups at your usual distance to confirm point of impact. Solid copper bullets often shoot to a different point than lead-core ammunition of the same weight, so a fresh zero check is always worth the time, and clean copper fouling from the bore if accuracy starts to drift.
Recoil and Shootability
Recoil is moderate, somewhere between a 5.56 and a 308. In a typical AK or SKS it is very manageable, which makes the cartridge pleasant for new shooters. Brass cases, unlike common steel cases, are reloadable.
