Description
The Fiocchi 12SD18L7 Shooting Dynamics 12ga shell, item 12SD18L7, is a 12 gauge, 2-3/4 inch target load carrying 1 1/8 oz of #7.5 lead shot at a rated 1165 fps. Fiocchi calls it an Exacta Light load: the full traditional payload, driven at a slower and softer speed.
Fiocchi 12SD18L7 Shooting Dynamics 12ga Overview
Many trap and sporting shooters like the forgiving pattern of a full 1 1/8 ounce charge but not the recoil that comes with it at higher speeds. This shell answers that by keeping the heavy payload and dialing the velocity back to about 1,165 fps. The result is a smooth push rather than a sharp jolt, especially in heavier target guns. Shooting Dynamics shells are built with chilled lead shot, cushioned wads and clean-burning powder, and they are loaded in the USA, so you get dependable patterns at a price that makes regular practice realistic.
Shot Size and Pattern
Number 7.5 shot is the classic all-round clay size. It carries enough pellet energy to break targets cleanly at typical trap and sporting distances while still filling the pattern well, which is why many shooters use it as their default target shell. Pattern your gun on paper at the distances you shoot most, and match your choke to the target: open chokes for close stations, tighter chokes for longer trap yardage.
Payload and Recoil
A 1 1/8 ounce payload is the traditional full 12 gauge target charge, and the heaviest allowed in most trap and sporting clays events. It gives a full, forgiving pattern, but it also produces the most recoil of the common target loads. At a rated 1165 fps this is a lighter, softer-shooting load. Lower speed means less felt recoil and a gentler push, at the cost of slightly more lead on fast crossing targets.
Shotgun Compatibility
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns with a chamber of 2-3/4 inches or longer. It runs in break-action and pump guns without concern, and most gas-operated semi-autos cycle it reliably. Some inertia-driven and older recoil-operated designs prefer heavier loads, so test a box in your gun before match day. Never place a shell in a gun of a different gauge; a 20 gauge shell can slip past the chamber of a 12 gauge barrel and cause a dangerous obstruction.
Practice and Competition
This is a target and training load. It is well suited to 16-yard trap, sporting clays, skeet and league shooting where a full, forgiving pattern matters more than raw speed. Many hunters also use similar lead loads on doves and other small upland birds, but check your state regulations for legal shot types, and remember that lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl.
Consistency and Value
Because Shooting Dynamics is priced for volume, it is easy to buy a flat or a case and stay on one lot for a whole season. That consistency helps you trust your timing and your hold points. Many shooters use this light 1 1/8 ounce load for practice and then switch to faster handicap shells only when distances stretch out.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Heat and humidity can affect powder and primers over time, and crushed or split hulls should never be fired. Rotate older boxes forward so they get used first.
