Why a 300 Grain Soft Point

The 450 Bushmaster was designed to give the AR-15 platform big-game stopping power, and it has become especially popular in states that allow straight-wall cartridges for deer. It throws a heavy .452 caliber bullet with a lot of energy, making quick, clean kills at woods and field distances.

A jacketed soft point is a proven hunting design. The exposed lead tip starts expansion on impact while the copper jacket controls how fast the bullet opens, so it mushrooms reliably without breaking apart too quickly. At 300 grains, the bullet carries plenty of momentum for deep penetration on big-bodied game.

The large-diameter bullet leaves a wide wound channel and a good blood trail, which matters in thick cover where recovering game quickly is important. Recoil is noticeable but manageable, especially from heavier rifles or ARs with a good buffer system.

DoubleTap ammunition is known for careful quality control and purpose-built hunting loads. The DoubleTap 450 Bushmaster 300gr JSP gives straight-wall hunters a dependable heavy-bullet option built for real field performance.

Field Notes and Hunting Tips

Older store data described this item as a bonded hunting bullet, while the current distributor listing for this UPC identifies it as a 300 grain jacketed soft point. Check your box label and record the bullet type you actually have.

Zero your rifle with this exact load at 100 yards. Heavy 450 Bushmaster bullets drop quickly past 150 yards, so know your holdover and keep shots inside a range where you can hit reliably.

If you run the 450 Bushmaster in an AR, confirm reliable feeding with your magazines. Dedicated 450 Bushmaster magazines or properly modified mags work best, and testing a few full loads before the season prevents surprises in the stand.

Aim for the heart and lungs just behind the shoulder. A heavy soft point usually leaves a good blood trail, but give the animal time before you start tracking.

Use quality optics with a reticle or turret marked for heavy bullets. A low-power variable scope suits the cartridge well, giving a wide field of view for close shots in timber while still offering enough magnification for field edges and food plots.

Check your state’s straight-wall cartridge rules before the season, since case length and caliber limits vary. Practice from field positions, and store spare boxes in a cool, dry place away from solvents and lubricants.

This load is a strong fit for deer, hog, and black bear hunters who run a 450 Bushmaster AR or bolt gun, especially in straight-wall states. If you want 450 Bushmaster hunting ammo with a proven heavy soft point, the DoubleTap 450 Bushmaster 300gr JSP is a proven choice.
