Diamondback SDR 357 Black Nitride Overview

Diamondback built the SDR to answer a simple question: why should a small defensive revolver hold only five rounds? The SDR holds six, weighs about 21.2 ounces and measures 6.53 inches overall, with a 1:18.75 barrel twist. Sights are a fiber optic front and a dovetailed fiber optic rear, which are much quicker to pick up than the shallow trough sights found on many small-frame revolvers. The trigger works double action or single action, and black rubber grips with the DB logo help manage recoil.

Black Nitride Finish

Black nitride is a hardened surface treatment, not a paint or coating, so it resists wear and corrosion well and will not chip or flake. The matte black look reflects little light and shows less holster wear than polished stainless. It is a good match for a gun that will live in a holster, a vehicle or a nightstand, where a low-profile finish is preferred.

Choosing Your Ammunition

The 357 Magnum chambering gives you flexibility. Full-power 357 loads from a 2 inch barrel produce stiff recoil, loud report and a big muzzle flash, which can be disorienting indoors. Many owners carry a 38 Special +P defensive load, which this revolver is rated for, and practice with standard 38 Special to keep costs and fatigue down. Whatever you choose, shoot enough of your carry load to know you can control it.

Trigger and Safety

The double action pull is heavy and long, as on all defensive revolvers, and Diamondback designs it to stay smooth without stacking near the end. Cocking the hammer gives a light single action pull for careful shots. An internal transfer bar keeps the hammer from contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled fully to the rear, and there is no external safety to remember under stress.

Carrying a Six-Shot Snub

At just over 21 ounces, this revolver is heavier than alloy pocket guns but far easier to shoot. It rides well in a belt holster or a sturdy IWB rig. The six-round cylinder is wider than a five-shot J-frame, so you will need a holster made for the SDR or a comparable six-shot small frame. Carry a speed strip or compatible speedloader and practice reloading under time pressure.

Value and Ownership

Diamondback is a Florida maker better known for pistols and AR-15s than for revolvers, and the SDR is its first wheelgun. It offers six rounds, fiber optic sights and all-steel construction at a value price. Long-term resale and aftermarket support are not yet as strong as for legacy revolver brands, so buy it to shoot rather than as an investment.

State Laws and Ownership

Diamondback promotes the SDR line as compliant in some restrictive states, but approved roster listings can differ by finish and model number. Confirm that this black nitride model is approved where you live before ordering, and review local laws on carrying a handgun.
