Description
The Dark Mountain Arms Stowaway 57×28 5 is a large-format, single-shot, bolt-action pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm. It weighs about 2 pounds, has a 5 inch barrel threaded 1/2×28, and the barrel comes off so the pistol packs down to roughly 7 inches long. Dark Mountain Arms is a veteran-owned company that builds the Stowaway in the USA. This listing is UPC 850061930019, manufacturer part number SA-101, finished in black.
Dark Mountain Arms Stowaway 57×28 5 Overview
The Stowaway pistol shares its receiver with the Stowaway rifle, and it was built for the same job: a light, simple firearm that disappears into a pack or vehicle until you need it. Assembled, it is 11.5 inches long and 6.88 inches tall. The receiver is aluminum and steel with glass-filled nylon parts and a corrosion-resistant finish. A full-length Picatinny rail on top takes a red dot or a long eye relief pistol scope, which is how most owners run it.
Action and Single-Shot Operation
This is a manually operated, single-shot bolt action. You load one round directly into the chamber, close the bolt, and fire. The hammer is single action with a half-cock position for safer carry. With no magazine, there is nothing to lose and very little to maintain. Be clear about what it is: a one-shot pistol is a field and utility tool, not a carry gun or a home defense handgun, and follow-up shots are slow.
Removable Barrel
The barrel detaches without tools, cutting the pistol down to about 7.1 inches for storage. That makes it easy to keep in a glovebox safe, tackle box or bug-out bag, where local law allows. Keep the barrel threads and locking surfaces clean and lightly oiled, and confirm the barrel is fully seated before firing, because a loose takedown joint will open up groups.
Caliber Conversion
Like the rifle, the Stowaway pistol is caliber-convertible between 5.7x28mm and 9mm with a barrel and bolt face change. Conversion kits are sold separately by Dark Mountain Arms and are not included. Practicing with a 9mm barrel is a good way to save money, since 5.7x28mm ammunition costs noticeably more per round.
Optics and Muzzle Threading
The top rail accepts most Picatinny-mount reflex sights and pistol scopes. The 1/2×28 muzzle threads take a thread protector or muzzle device. Suppressors are NFA items that need an approved ATF Form 4 and must be legal in your state, and MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items. Dark Mountain Arms also offers a short barreled rifle kit that adds a stock. Putting a stock on this pistol makes it a short-barreled rifle, which requires an approved ATF Form 1 before you install it.
The 5.7x28mm Cartridge
The 5.7x28mm is light, fast and very soft shooting. From a 5 inch barrel it is accurate and easy to manage, which makes the Stowaway pleasant for new shooters and for plinking at steel. It can work for small game and pests where handguns and this cartridge are legal to hunt with, but it is not a deer cartridge. Check your state game regulations before you hunt.
Ownership Notes
Handgun rules vary widely by state, including purchase permits, roster requirements and transport rules. Check your state and local laws before you order, and make sure your receiving dealer can transfer handguns.
