Description
The Dark Mountain Arms Stowaway 57×28 16 is an ultralight, single-shot, bolt-action takedown rifle chambered in 5.7x28mm. The 16 inch barrel detaches so the whole rifle breaks down to about 16.65 inches, small enough to ride inside most daypacks. Dark Mountain Arms is a veteran-owned company that builds the Stowaway in the USA. This listing is UPC 850061930002, manufacturer part number SA-100, finished in black.
Dark Mountain Arms Stowaway 57×28 16 Overview
The Stowaway was designed as a survival and utility rifle rather than a range toy. Dark Mountain Arms calls it the most versatile single-shot firearm they could build, and the idea is simple: a light, compact rifle you can carry everywhere and assemble in seconds when you need it. Assembled, it measures 31.78 inches and weighs just 2.8 pounds. The receiver is aluminum and steel with glass-filled nylon parts and a corrosion-resistant finish. A Picatinny rail on top takes a red dot or compact scope, and the muzzle is threaded 1/2×28 for a thread protector or other muzzle device.
Action and Single-Shot Operation
This is a manually operated, single-shot bolt action. You load one round directly into the chamber, close the bolt, and fire. The hammer is single action with a half-cock position, so it can be carried with the hammer down off the firing position until you are ready. There is no magazine to lose or forget, which suits a pack gun that might sit for months between uses. The trade-off is obvious: follow-up shots are slow, so this is a precision tool for one well-placed shot rather than a defensive carbine.
Takedown Design
The barrel removes from the receiver without tools, which is the whole point of the Stowaway. Broken down, it is under 17 inches long and a little over 2 inches thick, so it fits in a backpack, truck console, boat bag or bush plane kit. Reassembly is fast. Keep the barrel and receiver threads clean and lightly oiled, and check that the barrel is fully seated before every range session, because a takedown joint that is not tight will hurt accuracy.
Caliber Conversion
The Stowaway platform is caliber-convertible. Swapping between 5.7x28mm and 9mm only takes a different barrel and bolt face, and Dark Mountain Arms sells conversion kits separately. That lets one receiver cover two of the most common small-bore cartridges in the country. Conversion kits are not included with this rifle.
Optics and Muzzle Threading
The top rail accepts most Picatinny-mount red dots and compact scopes. A small reflex sight keeps the package light and fast to use. The 1/2×28 muzzle threads accept a thread protector, flash hider or compensator. Many owners plan to add a suppressor. Keep in mind that suppressors are NFA items that need an approved ATF Form 4 and must be legal in your state, and MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items.
The 5.7x28mm Cartridge
The 5.7x28mm is a light, fast, low-recoil cartridge originally developed by FN. From a 16 inch barrel it shoots flat out to moderate range and is pleasant to shoot for new shooters. It is well suited to small game and pests where legal. It is not a deer cartridge, so check your state game regulations before you hunt with it. Ammunition costs more per round than 9mm or 22 LR, so many owners practice with the 9mm conversion.
Ownership Notes
The Stowaway ships as a rifle with a 16 inch barrel and a stock, so it is a standard Title I firearm. Do not install a barrel under 16 inches on this receiver with the stock attached unless you have an approved ATF Form 1, because that creates a short-barreled rifle under the NFA. Check your state and local laws for any magazine, feature or transport rules before you order.
