Description
The CZ Custom A01-SD is the short dustcover member of the A01 family, built by hand in Mesa, Arizona in 9mm Luger with a match grade bull barrel, an optic cut slide and nineteen rounds in the magazine. It is the balance point of the line: most of the weight and all of the trigger work of the long dustcover gun, in a package that does not feel like a bar of steel hanging off your wrist.
What the CZ Custom A01-SD Brings
The short dustcover on the CZ Custom A01-SD is the whole distinction, and it changes more than the profile. Less steel ahead of the trigger guard means the gun balances closer to the hand, transitions between targets take less effort, and it hangs on a belt without dragging one side down. The long dustcover build tracks flatter under recoil, but it also asks more of your grip over a long stage.
Everything behind that on the CZ Custom A01-SD is the same shop build. A hammer forged and CNC machined steel frame in black polycoat, a deep beavertail, an undercut trigger guard, 25 LPI checkering and an internal magwell, with black G10 grip panels. The slide is CNC machined from bar stock, serrated front and rear, and milled for the CZ Custom plate system so a red dot sits low over the bore.
The CZ Custom A01-SD trigger is done before it ships. Hammer and sear are pinned directly into the frame rather than living in a removable group, which is the structural reason the pull stays consistent shot after shot. Double action runs roughly 8 to 8.5 pounds, single action 3 to 3.5, and the reset is short enough to work at speed without thinking about it.
Optic, Magazines and Practical Details
Order the plate with the gun. A CZ Custom A01-SD is cut for the shop proprietary plate system, not for a Trijicon or Shield footprint directly, so you need the plate that matches your specific optic before the pistol is usable. It also ships without iron sights, which is normal for a Carry Optics build but worth knowing before the box arrives.
Magazines for the CZ Custom A01-SD come from the P-07, P-09 and P-10 family rather than the older CZ 75 pattern, which is how the frame reaches nineteen rounds without an extension. They are common, they are reasonably priced, and buying four or five at once is the right move if you are shooting a season rather than a single match.
Accuracy comes from the barrel and the lockup. This is a 416 stainless match grade bull profile fitted without a bushing, so the barrel returns to the same place every cycle. Paired with a steel frame that soaks up recoil rather than flexing, the mechanical side of the equation is settled and what is left is the shooter.

Who Should Be Looking at One
The competitor who wants the A01 trigger and frame without the full length dustcover is the obvious buyer. A CZ Custom A01-SD gives up a little muzzle stability and gets back speed between targets, and which side of that trade you want depends on the stages you shoot.
It is also the more sensible choice for anyone who might occasionally carry the gun. A CZ Custom A01-SD is still heavy by modern standards, but the balance is far more reasonable on a belt than the long dustcover version, and the short dustcover clears more holsters cut for a standard CZ profile.
Be clear that this is a premium build. A CZ Custom A01-SD costs several times what a good factory competition pistol costs, and that is before the plate, the optic and a belt full of magazines. It rewards a shooter who has already found the limits of a factory gun, and it will not do much for one who has not.
Choosing within the family is mostly about dustcover length and role. The A01-LD OR is the flatter tracking match gun, the A01-C is the compact, and a CZ Custom A01-SD sits between them. Practical notes before you order. Buy the matching CZ Custom optic plate at the same time, because the pistol will not accept a red dot without it. Confirm the part number 96333 against any holster you already own. Budget for spare magazines early, since shop built runs sell through and the P-07 pattern magazine is the one you want.
Full factory details for the A01 platform are published on the CZ Custom site, and you can compare this build against the A01-LD OR or browse our other semi-automatic handguns.
