Chiappa Rhino 60SAR 9mm 6 Inch Black Single-Action Revolver – Superb Target Six-Shot

Description

The Chiappa Rhino 60SAR 9mm 6 Inch Black (model CF340.279) is the long-barrel, single-action Rhino in 9mm Luger. The 6 inch barrel gives the longest sight radius in the SAR family, making it the one to choose for target shooting and accuracy at distance.

Chiappa Rhino 60SAR 9mm 6 Inch Black Overview

Chiappa’s Rhino fires from the bottom chamber of its six-shot cylinder, lining the bore up with your wrist so recoil comes straight back. The SAR version is single action only: you cock the lever for each shot and the trigger releases a short, crisp pull. The frame is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and black anodized, with a steel cylinder and barrel, a medium walnut grip and a 1 in 9 twist. Chiappa lists the overall length at 10.5 inches.

Built for Precision

A 6 inch barrel puts the front sight farther from your eye, so small aiming errors show up clearly and are easier to correct. Combined with the light single-action release, it makes this the most accurate-feeling of the 9mm Rhinos for bullseye-style shooting, bowling pins and steel at 25 yards and beyond. The trade-off is length: it is a range and field gun, awkward in most belt holsters.

Weight Figures Differ

Chiappa’s product page lists 0.9 pounds, which is not plausible for a steel-cylinder 6 inch revolver, and Lipsey’s lists about 1.97 pounds, the same as the 5 inch. Expect real weight close to two pounds. Lipsey’s also files this UPC under the name 60DS while describing a single-action gun, but Chiappa’s catalog lists CF340.279 as the 60SAR, which is what this listing is.

Moon Clips and Ammunition

Because 9mm is rimless, the cylinder is loaded with six-round clips; Lipsey’s lists three in the box. Extra clips and an unloading tool make range sessions far easier. Standard 115 and 124 grain FMJ is ideal for practice, and the longer barrel gets more velocity from it than the shorter Rhinos. Follow Chiappa’s manual on +P ammunition and inspect clips for bends that can drag on the frame.

Field Use

With a scope mount or red dot on the frame rail, a 6 inch 9mm can work as a light hunting handgun for small game where handgun hunting with 9mm is legal, though it is underpowered for deer in most states. Check your state’s minimum caliber and energy rules. The fiber optic front works well in daylight, but in timber at dawn a light-gathering optic is a better choice.

Value and Caveats

Like every Rhino, this is a premium-priced, unusual revolver. Parts and repairs come from Chiappa, holsters for 6 inch Rhinos are limited, and resale depends on fellow enthusiasts. For shooters who want a soft-recoiling 9mm target revolver that is easy to manage and unlike anything else at the range, the 60SAR earns its place.

State Laws and Ownership

Revolvers are legal to own in every state, but the purchase rules vary. New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, Hawaii and several other states require a permit, license or ID card before a dealer can transfer a handgun, and some keep their own approved-handgun lists. Single-action revolvers that meet minimum barrel length, overall length and capacity rules are exempt from California’s handgun roster, which is part of why Chiappa offers SAR models, but every California sale still goes through the state’s own background check and waiting period. Your receiving dealer can confirm what applies to you.
