Description
The Chiappa Rhino 40DS 9mm Revolver is one of the most distinctive handguns on the market. Chiappa’s Rhino fires from the bottom chamber of the cylinder instead of the top, and this 4 inch medium-frame model (Chiappa 340.165) is chambered in 9mm Luger, one of the cheapest and easiest centerfire cartridges to find.

Chiappa Rhino 40DS 9mm Revolver Overview
Firing from the six o’clock chamber gives the Rhino a very low bore axis, so recoil drives more straight back into your hand and less up into the air. The result is a revolver that feels softer and returns to target faster than a conventional design with the same weight. The frame is black anodized aluminum, the barrel and cylinder are steel, and the gun weighs about 29.9 ounces with an overall length of 8.5 inches. Medium-size walnut grips fill the hand without making the gun bulky.
Action and Hammer
The Rhino is a double action and single action revolver with a concealed hammer. What looks like a hammer spur is actually a cocking lever: thumb it back to cock the internal hammer for a light single action shot, and it returns to its resting position. The double action pull is long and smooth, though it feels different from a Smith and Wesson or Ruger trigger, so plan on some dry-fire practice with snap caps.

Sights
A fixed fiber optic front sight pairs with a fully adjustable fiber optic rear, so you can zero the gun for your preferred load. Fiber optics are bright and fast in daylight but do not glow in total darkness the way tritium does; add a weapon light or plan for that limitation if this is a home defense gun.
9mm Moon Clips
Because 9mm is a rimless cartridge, the Rhino uses moon clips to hold and extract the rounds. Chiappa includes three moon clips and a shell removing tool. Loaded clips work like very fast speed loaders, and the whole cylinder ejects as a unit. Extra clips are inexpensive and worth buying so you can keep several loaded.

Practice and Training
Regular practice builds confidence and safe handling. Start at close range, focus on sight alignment and a smooth trigger press, and work back as your groups tighten. Dry fire with snap caps at home to improve your trigger control between range trips.
Choosing Ammunition
Try several brands and bullet weights to see what feeds reliably and groups best in your handgun. Use quality full metal jacket loads for practice and proven hollow points for defense, and confirm reliable function with your defensive load before carrying it.
Ownership Notes
The Rhino has a learning curve for holsters and cleaning. Holster choices are narrower than for common revolvers, so confirm a holster exists for the 4 inch medium frame before you buy. Disassembly is more involved than on a traditional revolver, and grips and parts are specific to Chiappa.
Care and Maintenance
Clean the barrel, slide or cylinder and frame after shooting, apply a light coat of quality lubricant to moving parts, and store the handgun unloaded in a locked case or safe away from children.
Safe Storage
Store handguns unloaded in a locked safe, lockbox or with a cable lock, and keep ammunition separate when children are in the home. Quick access safes keep a defensive handgun secure but available. Teach everyone in the household basic firearm safety rules.
Recommended Accessories
A quality holster, spare magazines, eye and ear protection and a cleaning kit round out any handgun purchase. For defensive use, add a weapon light and practice drawing safely from your holster with an unloaded gun before carrying.
