Chiappa Rhino 30SAR Nebula 357 Mag Revolver – Striking 3 in. Single Action, 6 Round

Description

The Chiappa Rhino 30SAR Nebula 357 Mag is a 3-inch, six-shot .357 Magnum revolver in Chiappa’s rainbow Nebula PVD finish with blue laminate grips. It is the single-action-only version of the Rhino, and it is one of the most unusual revolvers you can buy.

Chiappa Rhino 30SAR Nebula 357 Mag Overview

Chiappa’s Rhino turns revolver design on its head. Instead of firing from the top chamber, the barrel lines up with the bottom chamber of the cylinder, which puts the recoil directly into the web of your hand. This configuration, model CF340.319, pairs a 3-inch barrel with an aluminum alloy frame, a hexagonal-profile cylinder that lies flatter against the body, a fiber-optic front sight with an adjustable rear, and a Nebula PVD coating that shifts through purple, gold and blue depending on the light.

How the Rhino Design Shoots

Because it fires from the bottom chamber, the Rhino has a very low bore axis, and that changes how .357 Magnum feels. Muzzle flip is greatly reduced compared with a conventional snub revolver of similar weight, so follow-up shots come back on target faster. Felt recoil is still real with full-power Magnum loads in a 1.7-pound gun, but many shooters find it more controllable than a steel J-frame. With .38 Special the Rhino is downright mild, which makes it easy to practice with.

Single Action Only Operation

The SAR designation means this Rhino fires in single action only. Before every shot you cock the external cocking lever, which sets the internal hammer, and then a light, crisp trigger press fires the round. There is no double-action mode, so this is not the best choice for a primary defensive revolver; Chiappa’s DS models offer double action. A visual indicator shows when the action is cocked. Always lower the cocking lever with care and keep your finger off the trigger until on target.

Loading and Moon Clips

The cylinder swings out to the left for loading like a conventional double-action revolver. The cylinder is cut for moon clips, and three are included, so you can load and unload all six rounds at once. Moon clips need a loading and unloading tool to avoid bending them, and bent clips cause binding, so handle them with care. You can also load loose .357 Magnum or .38 Special rounds one at a time.

Sights, Grips and Carry

The red fiber-optic front sight is easy to see in daylight, and the rear sight adjusts for windage and elevation, so you can zero for your preferred load. Blue laminate wood grips fill the hand and match the Nebula finish. The package includes a leather holster, which is welcome since Rhino holsters are less common than those for Smith and Wesson or Ruger revolvers. At 7.5 inches overall it is compact, but the hexagonal cylinder and tall frame make it chunkier than its length suggests.

Finish Durability and Ownership Notes

PVD is a thin, hard vapor-deposited coating that resists wear better than paint, but the Nebula finish will still show holster rub and scratches over years of use. Clean it with gentle solvents and soft cloths. The Rhino is more complex inside than a traditional revolver, so detailed disassembly is best left to a gunsmith familiar with the design. Parts and accessories are available but not as widespread as for mainstream revolvers, so buy spare moon clips early.

Before You Buy

Federal law requires you to be 21 or older to buy a handgun from a licensed dealer, and the revolver must ship to an FFL for transfer and a background check. Our original listing calls this an SAO model; Chiappa’s designation is 30SAR, the single-action-only Rhino. Read the manual before loading, because the Rhino’s cocking lever and moon clips work differently from other revolvers.

Who It Is For

The Chiappa Rhino 30SAR Nebula 357 Mag is a great fit for revolver enthusiasts and collectors who want a soft-shooting, eye-catching .357 Magnum for range days, and shooters curious about how a bottom-barrel wheelgun handles.
