CH Precision Duty XL Red Dot Overview
C&H Precision Weapons built the Duty XL around one common complaint about enclosed pistol optics: small windows. The XL housing measures roughly 47 x 35 x 32 mm, giving a noticeably larger sight picture than compact closed emitters while staying sized for full-size and compact duty pistols. Inside is the same red multi-reticle system, so you can run a 3 MOA dot, a 30 MOA circle, or both together. Magnification is 1x, so you shoot with both eyes open and use the dot as an aiming reference rather than a scope.
Why a Bigger Window Helps
When a pistol comes up under stress, the dot is not always where you expect it. A wider window gives your eye more room to catch the reticle if the gun is slightly off angle, which shortens the hunt for the dot that newer red dot shooters often experience. It also makes it easier to keep both eyes open and maintain awareness around the target. The trade-off is a larger, slightly heavier housing at about 2.5 ounces with the battery installed, so it rides a little higher and wider on the slide than the standard Duty.
Sealed Against the Elements
The closed-emitter design places the diode inside a sealed housing between front and rear lenses, so rain, snow, lint and debris cannot sit on the emitter and block the dot. The body is CNC machined from one piece of aircraft-grade aluminum and carries an IPX7 rating, which covers submersion to one meter for 30 minutes. C&H rates the optic shockproof and suitable for +P and +P+ loads, a fair expectation for a sight that will ride on a reciprocating slide for thousands of rounds.
Reticle Options
The 3 MOA dot is small enough for precise shots at 25 yards and beyond, while the 30 MOA circle gives a fast, bold reference at close range. Running both together is popular because the circle draws the eye and the center dot handles precision. Ten brightness levels cover low light through bright sun, and two of them are designed to work with night vision devices. Windage and elevation adjust in 1 MOA clicks with 45 MOA of travel per axis, and the optic is parallax-free at 33 yards.
Battery and Motion Activation
The battery sits in a side compartment, so changing it does not require pulling the optic off the slide and losing zero. One coin cell is rated for up to 50,000 hours. The Shake Awake system switches the sight on when it senses movement and powers it down after five minutes of inactivity, so the optic is ready when you draw without draining the cell in the safe. Replace the battery on a regular schedule anyway; it is cheap insurance on a duty or carry gun.
Mounting Considerations
The Duty XL is designed around the Aimpoint ACRO footprint with a double-bar side clamp. Depending on your slide or optic plate, an adapter may be required, so confirm compatibility before you order. Pistols cut for RMR, RMSc or other patterns will need a plate or milling for the ACRO pattern. On a carbine, an ACRO-pattern Picatinny mount lets the XL serve as a primary red dot or an offset backup, where the larger window is an advantage for quick transitions.
Duty XL vs. Standard Duty
Both optics share the same reticles, battery life, brightness range and sealed aluminum housing. The XL trades a little size and weight for a wider window, while the standard Duty is the better pick for smaller slides and deeper concealment. If you mostly carry a full-size pistol or shoot competition, the XL window is easier to live with. If you carry a compact in a tight appendix holster, the standard model may print less and fit more holsters.

Before You Buy
