Description

The Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm is the steel-framed version of the Rival, and the difference is not cosmetic. Model HG7010CN builds the same 5 inch competition pistol on a stainless steel frame rather than polymer, which takes the weight from 29.5 ounces to 42.72 and turns the recoil impulse into something closer to a push than a flip.

That weight is the entire point. On a timed stage the Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm barely moves between shots, and a red dot that stays inside the window is worth more than any amount of trigger tuning. The slide is ported as well, so gas is working against muzzle rise at the same time the mass is resisting it.

The finish on this one is chrome, with black controls and black grip panels against the bright frame and slide. Two 18-round magazines are in the case along with three optic plates, a magwell, a holster and a toolkit. It is a gun you can take to a match the week you buy it.

Why a stainless steel frame pistol shoots flatter

  • A stainless steel frame pistol carries its extra mass low and central, which resists the rotation that lifts a muzzle
  • 42.72 ounces against 29.5 for the polymer Rival is a 45 percent increase in weight, and it is immediately obvious on the timer
  • Steel absorbs the sharp part of the recoil impulse rather than transmitting it into the web of your hand
  • The trade is carry weight: this is a range and competition pistol, not a belt gun, and we will not pretend otherwise
  • Steel frames also damp the small vibrations that blur a red dot at speed

Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm case contents: pistol, magazines, optic plates, backstraps, holster and toolkit

Three optic plates included, and what that saves you

Canik ships three optic plates with the chrome Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm, covering the common micro red dot footprints. The Dark Side version ships with two. Three optic plates included means the dot already in your safe almost certainly mounts without a gunsmith and without a two-week wait for a forty dollar piece of aluminum, which is the usual friction point on an optic-ready pistol.

Underneath the plate the irons are worth keeping. The front is a fiber optic rod that gathers ambient light, and the rear is fully adjustable for windage and elevation, which is unusual at any price and genuinely useful if you shoot more than one load. Spare fiber rods are in the case, because they do get broken.

The chrome ported slide and how it behaves

The chrome ported slide on the Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm bleeds gas upward through cuts near the muzzle, pushing the front of the pistol down against the recoil impulse. On a 42.72 ounce gun the porting is doing less work than it would on a light polymer pistol, because the mass is already handling most of it, but the two together are what keep the dot in the window. The practical effect is that follow-up shots land where you are already looking rather than where you have to re-find.

Chrome is a bright finish and it shows fingerprints and handling marks more readily than a nitride or Cerakote would. That is worth knowing if you are the sort of owner who wants a gun to look factory-fresh. If it bothers you, the Canik SFx Rival-S Darkside is exactly the same pistol in a dark finish.

Magazines that fit the Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm

Two 18-round magazines come in the case. Spares are the Canik TP9 full-size 18-round magazine, which is the factory part and which we stock deep. For a match gun the TTI Combat full-size 18-round magazine with the plus-three extension gives you 21 rounds on board.

The same fitment warning as the rest of the range. Canik magazines are not interchangeable across the whole line. TP9 Elite, TP9 Compact and TP9 Sub Compact magazines have shorter bodies and will not run in a full-size gun. Anything you buy for the Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm must say full size.

What is in the case

Every Canik SFx Rival-S 9mm ships in a water-resistant hard case with two 18-round magazines, a magazine loader, an external magwell, a holster, a Canik punch and toolkit, a cleaning kit, spare fiber optic rods, three optic plates, interchangeable grip backstraps, magazine release extensions, a gun lock and the manual. Canik publishes the full list on the official SFx Rival-S page.

If the steel frame is more gun than you want to carry or hold up for a long session, the polymer-framed Canik SFx Rival is the same design at 29.5 ounces and a lower price.

Why this firearm earns its place

  • A stainless steel frame at a price most makers charge for polymer
  • 42.72 ounces and a ported slide, which together do more for follow-up shots than any aftermarket part
  • Three optic plates, a holster, a magwell and a toolkit in the case, so nothing is left to buy
  • Fully adjustable rear sight and a fiber optic front, with spare rods included
  • Ambidextrous controls out of the box, which left-handed shooters normally pay to add

This suits the USPSA, Steel Challenge or Carry Optics shooter who wants a steel-framed competition pistol without a custom price, and the range shooter who simply enjoys how a heavy 9mm behaves. At 42.72 ounces it is not a carry gun and we would steer you elsewhere if that is what you need.

Every firearm we ship goes to a licensed dealer in your state for the transfer and the background check. Magazine capacity is limited in some states, so check your local rules before you order.
