Description
The Buffalo Bore 223 Rem 69gr BTHP sits in the middle of their Sniper line and, for a great many rifles, it is the sweet spot. A 69 grain boat tail hollow point at 2900 fps carries about 1288 ft-lbs, and the 69 grain weight has been the standard match bullet in 223 for decades because it shoots well in almost everything with a 1:9 twist.

Buffalo Bore 223 Rem 69gr BTHP Overview
Buffalo Bore item S22369 is part of their Sniper line. The 69 grain boat tail hollow point runs 2900 fps for roughly 1288 ft-lbs. Twenty rounds per box.
Buffalo Bore specifies a 1:9 inch twist barrel for this load. That is the most common twist in AR-15 barrels built before the 1:7 standard took over, and it is also very widely used in bolt action varmint and target rifles.
It sits between the 55 grain polymer tip at 3300 fps and the 77 grain at 2800 fps. Each of the three is matched to a different twist rate, which is what makes the line useful rather than merely long.
The Sniper name is Buffalo Bore’s label for their precision rifle loads rather than a claim about tactical use. In practice it means carefully selected match components, tight loading tolerances and published velocities taken from real barrels.
223 Sniper Match Ammo Ballistics
At 2900 fps a 69 grain bullet produces about 1288 ft-lbs, from grains times velocity squared divided by 450437. That is very close to what the 55 grain load makes at 3300 fps, delivered with a heavier bullet that holds its velocity better downrange.
The boat tail is doing the work past two hundred yards. Tapering the base reduces drag, which means less drop and considerably less wind drift than a flat base bullet of the same weight. For a cartridge as light as the 223, wind is usually the limiting factor.
Retained energy at four hundred yards is meaningfully higher than the 55 grain load despite the lower muzzle figure, which is the whole argument for a heavier bullet in a 1 in 9 twist precision load.
Recoil in an AR-15 is negligible, which is part of why 223 Sniper match ammo in this weight is so pleasant to shoot well. Nothing about the cartridge encourages a flinch, and that alone accounts for a share of its accuracy reputation.
Why The 69 Grain Boat Tail Hollow Point Bullet Groups So Well
A boat tail hollow point of this type is a match bullet rather than a hunting design. The hollow nose is a manufacturing artefact of drawing the jacket from the base forward, which puts the thickest, most uniform part of the jacket at the front where it matters for concentricity.
That construction is why match bullets group the way they do. Weight and jacket thickness vary very little from round to round, and the centre of gravity sits consistently in the same place, so the bullet leaves the muzzle with less yaw.
69 grains has been the benchmark weight in 223 competition since the Sierra MatchKing of that weight became standard in service rifle shooting. It stabilises in a 1:9 twist, fits a magazine without intruding on powder space, and carries a good ballistic coefficient.
For hunting it works on varmints and predators, opening reliably at these velocities. It is not built for deer, and Buffalo Bore does not market it that way. Match grade AR platform ammunition is for paper, steel and small game.
The hollow point at the tip is not an expansion feature in the usual sense. It is very small, and at match bullet velocities it contributes far less to terminal effect than the bullet simply yawing and coming apart on impact.
The result is the most broadly useful weight in the line: a 69 grain boat tail hollow point bullet that shoots well in the twist rate most rifles actually have.

Rifles That Take This 1 In 9 Twist Precision Load
This load suits any rifle chambered in 223 Remington or 5.56x45mm with a 1:9 twist barrel in sound working order. That covers a great many AR-15 uppers, the Ruger American Predator, Savage and Remington varmint rifles, and most 223 bolt guns built in the last thirty years.
A 1:8 twist barrel will also stabilise a 69 grain bullet comfortably, so owners of modern AR barrels are generally fine. A 1:12 twist is too slow and accuracy will suffer badly.
Check the barrel marking before ordering. It takes a moment and it is the single thing that determines whether this ammunition will group well in your rifle.
Zero with the ammunition you intend to shoot. A 69 grain boat tail hollow point bullet at 2900 fps lands noticeably differently from a 55 grain at 3300, and swapping between them without re-zeroing costs accuracy you paid for.
