Buffalo Bore 300 Win Mag 180gr TTSX – Blazing Long Range Load

$89.40

Buffalo Bore’s Premium Supercharged 300 Winchester Magnum sends a 180 grain Barnes Tipped TSX out at 3100 fps for about 3840 ft-lbs. The polymer tip sharpens the ballistic coefficient and the solid copper shank holds nearly all its weight, so it shoots flat and still penetrates. 20 rounds per box.

Description

The Buffalo Bore 300 Win Mag 180gr TTSX is the long range answer in their rifle catalogue. A 180 grain Barnes Tipped Triple Shock X at 3100 fps carries about 3840 ft-lbs, and the polymer tip gives it the ballistic coefficient to hold onto that energy well past the distance most people will shoot.

Buffalo Bore 300 Win Mag 180gr TTSX Overview

Buffalo Bore item 55B is part of their Premium Supercharged line. The 180 grain Barnes Tipped TSX runs 3100 fps for roughly 3840 ft-lbs. Twenty rounds per box.

The 300 Winchester Magnum arrived in 1963 and has become the default North American magnum. It fits a standard length action, it is available everywhere, and it does elk and open country mule deer work without the recoil penalty of the larger magnums.

Buffalo Bore loads it to the top of what the case will safely do. Factory 180 grain 300 Win Mag ammunition typically runs 2960 fps for about 3500 ft-lbs, so this adds roughly 140 fps and 340 ft-lbs over the common offerings.

The Premium Supercharged name describes Buffalo Bore’s approach rather than a marketing claim. Most factory ammunition is loaded conservatively to suit the weakest rifle that might chamber it, and supercharged magnum hunting ammunition is what careful pressure work looks like when that constraint is relaxed for modern actions.

300 Win Mag Lead Free Ammo Ballistics

At 3100 fps a 180 grain bullet produces about 3840 ft-lbs, from grains times velocity squared divided by 450437. That is genuinely close to what a 375 H&H makes, from a rifle that weighs less and kicks considerably less.

The polymer tip is what separates this from a standard TSX. It resists deformation in the magazine, initiates expansion reliably, and tightens the ballistic coefficient enough that the bullet retains meaningfully more velocity at four hundred yards.

Trajectory is the reason people buy a 300 Win Mag. With a two hundred yard zero a long range big game rifle load at 3100 fps stays within a few inches of the line of sight out past three hundred yards, which removes most of the range estimation problem.

Energy retention downrange is where the tip earns its place. A 180 grain Barnes Tipped TSX bullet still carries well over two thousand foot pounds at four hundred yards, which is more than many popular cartridges produce at the muzzle.

Why The 180 Grain Barnes Tipped TSX Bullet Shoots And Penetrates

The Barnes Tipped Triple Shock X is machined from solid copper bar stock with a polymer tip pressed into the hollow nose. There is no lead core and no jacket, which means nothing inside the bullet can separate when it meets heavy bone at 3100 fps.

On impact the tip is driven back into the cavity and the nose peels into four petals that stay attached to the shank. Weight retention typically runs ninety five percent or better, where a conventional cup and core bullet at this velocity can lose a third of its mass to fragmentation.

That matters more at 3100 fps than at any other speed. A lead cored bullet arriving this fast at close range is the classic recipe for a bullet that comes apart on the near shoulder, and a monolithic bullet simply does not do that.

Copper is less dense than lead, so this bullet is longer than a 180 grain lead cored one. Barnes machines relief grooves into the shank to handle the extra bearing surface, keeping pressure and copper fouling in check.

Accuracy tends to be excellent. Machined bullets vary far less in weight and concentricity than swaged ones, and 300 Win Mag lead free ammo built this way often outshoots the lead cored loads a rifle was sighted in with.

So the design solves both halves of the problem at once: a 180 grain Barnes Tipped TSX bullet shoots flat enough for open country and holds together well enough for a close shot on an elk, which is not a combination most bullets manage.

Rifles That Take This Long Range Big Game Rifle Load

Any rifle chambered in 300 Winchester Magnum in sound working order will handle this load. That covers the Winchester Model 70, Remington 700, Ruger Hawkeye, Tikka T3x, Savage 110, Browning X-Bolt, Bergara and essentially every other bolt action offered in the chambering.

Barrel length matters more here than with slower cartridges. A 26 inch barrel will get close to the published figure; a 22 inch barrel gives up perhaps eighty to a hundred feet per second. Neither is a problem, but it is worth knowing before you chronograph your rifle and wonder.

Being lead free, this load also meets the requirements in California and other jurisdictions that restrict lead ammunition for hunting, and it does so without asking you to accept less performance.

Sight in with the exact ammunition you intend to hunt with. At 3100 fps this load lands well above a standard 2960 fps factory load at four hundred yards, and that gap is the difference between a clean shot and a poor one.
