Browning X-Bolt 2 Speed SPR 6.8 Western Overview
The X-Bolt 2 is the newest version of the Browning flagship bolt action, with a redesigned receiver and bolt. SPR stands for suppressor ready: Browning shortened the barrel and belled the muzzle so the rifle stays handy with a can on the end, which matters in a tree stand, a ground blind or thick timber.
Vari-Tech Adjustable Stock
The Vari-Tech composite stock adjusts for length of pull, comb height and grip angle, so you can set the rifle up for a heavy coat or a summer shirt and get your eye lined up behind the scope. Browning lists a 13 5/8 inch base length of pull, and the OVIX camo pattern blends into a wide range of terrain.
Short Barrel and Belled Muzzle
The 20 inch sporter weight barrel is fluted to save weight and has a 1:7.5 twist. The belled muzzle is threaded 5/8-24, the most common thread pitch for 30 caliber and smaller hunting suppressors and muzzle devices. Browning product photos show a ported muzzle device on the rifle, so ask us whether a brake or a thread protector ships in the box before you plan around it. A shorter barrel gives up some velocity compared to a 24 or 26 inch tube, which is the trade for a rifle that balances well with a suppressor installed.
About Suppressors
A suppressor is an NFA item. It requires an approved ATF Form 4 and registration, wait times vary, and some states do not allow them at all. MAG5 does not sell NFA items, but the 5/8-24 threads on this rifle fit most popular hunting cans, and they also accept standard muzzle brakes.
Smoked Bronze Cerakote
The barrel and receiver wear Smoked Bronze Cerakote, a tough ceramic coating that resists rust, scratches and solvents, so the rifle can handle rain, snow and long days bouncing around in a truck.
Detachable Rotary Magazine
The detachable rotary magazine sits flush with the stock and feeds smoothly. Spare X-Bolt rotary magazines are easy to find and quick to swap in the field.
The 6.8 Western Cartridge
The 6.8 Western is a short action cartridge built to shoot heavy, long bullets with a fast twist barrel. It offers magnum class performance on elk and deer with less recoil, though ammunition is less common than mainstream calibers.
Mounting a Scope
The X-Bolt family uses its own scope mounting pattern, so buy bases or rings made for the X-Bolt, such as Browning Integrated Scope Mount System, rather than Remington 700 style bases.
Cleaning and Care
Clean the bore after each range session. If you shoot with a suppressor, remove it after use, check the threads for carbon and keep them lightly oiled so the can does not seize. Wipe the rifle down after a wet hunt.
State Laws
Bolt action rifles are legal in most places, but hunting rules on calibers, seasons and suppressor use vary. Check your state game laws. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.
