Description

B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot box of 20 hunting cartridges

Ask ten upland hunters which shot size to carry and most of them will eventually settle on 7.5. It kills birds cleanly, it breaks clays, and it does not chew up the meat on a close flush. The B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot puts that size in a genuine 2 1/2 inch low pressure shell, which is what a vintage gun actually wants.

The shot size that does everything

Pattern density and pellet energy pull in opposite directions. Bigger pellets hit harder individually but there are fewer of them in the payload. Smaller pellets fill the pattern but run out of energy sooner. At 7.5 the B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot sits at the point where most upland shooting happens, with enough pellets for a dense pattern and enough energy out to about thirty five yards.

One ounce of 7.5 shot holds roughly 350 pellets. That is a meaningfully denser pattern than the same payload in 6 shot, which matters on a bird that flushes at fifteen yards and gives you half a second. The B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot is forgiving in exactly the situations where you need forgiveness.

Note the shell length again, because it is the whole reason this line exists. 2 1/2 inches is the old European and English standard, and a great many fine guns were built to it. Firing a longer shell in a short chamber raises pressure sharply. The B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot is the right shell rather than a compromise.

Good on clays as well as game

Because 7.5 is also the standard trap and sporting clays size, the B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot lets you use the same load for practice as for the field. That is genuinely useful. Pattern and point of impact stay the same, so the gun handles identically on a clays course in August and on a grouse cover in October.

It also means you can shoot a round of skeet or sporting with a vintage gun without hunting for suitable ammunition. At 1160 feet per second and one ounce the B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot is well inside what a light double will handle comfortably for fifty or a hundred targets.

Honest notes before you buy

Nickel plated chilled lead is the reason the patterns hold up. Plating hardens the pellet surface so fewer deform on the way down the barrel, and round pellets fly true while deformed ones fly wide. On a pattern board the difference is visible.

Know the limits. This is lead shot and it is not legal for waterfowl anywhere in the United States, nor on some public land at all. And 7.5 runs out of authority past about forty yards on a bird as large as a pheasant, where 6 shot keeps working. Match the B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot to close and medium range flushing birds and it is excellent.

Recoil, and why a light gun needs a light load

A six pound side by side kicks harder with a given load than an eight pound over under does, simply because there is less mass to absorb it. The Gordon System basewad in the B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot has a shock absorbing spring built into the base, and the difference over a long day is real rather than marketing.

That matters for the gun as much as the shooter. Stock heads on century old guns crack, and heavy loads fired repeatedly through a light double are how it happens. Shooting the B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot rather than modern high velocity shells is cheap insurance on a gun that cannot be replaced.

The bottom line

For a vintage gun that goes to both the clays course and the grouse woods, the B&P Upland Classic 12ga 1oz 7.5 Shot is the single most useful shell in the line. You can read more about the bullet design at swiftbullets.com, or browse the rest of our stock on the MAG5 Firearms ammunition page.
