Description
The Black Rain SSP 556 Smoke is a semi-auto AR rifle from Black Rain Ordnance in 5.56 NATO, with a 16 inch 4150V chromoly barrel, a 15 inch slim M-LOK free float handguard and a Smoke finish. It ships with a 30 round magazine. This listing is UPC 681565230752, Black Rain item SSP-SMK.
Black Rain SSP 556 Smoke Overview
Black Rain Ordnance builds its rifles in Neosho, Missouri, and offers dozens of configurations and finishes across its rifle lines. The Spec+ Series is its value line, with over 100 build configurations and 27 finishes on forged receivers, plus upgrades like a nickel boron bolt carrier group and a 3.5 pound trigger.
Receiver and Controls
The forged Spec 15 receiver set is machined from aluminum forgings, the same method used for mil-spec AR-15s, and the charge handle has an oversized tactical latch that is easy to grab with gloves or with an optic mounted. The flat top upper has a full length Picatinny rail.
Barrel and Gas System
The 16 inch 4150V chromoly barrel runs a direct impingement gas system with a .750 low profile non adjustable gas block. Black Rain uses a nickel boron coated bolt carrier group in this rifle, which runs cleaner and is easier to wipe down than a plain phosphate carrier. The muzzle wears a castle flash suppressor, and a free float handguard keeps pressure off the barrel for better accuracy.
Handguard and Furniture
The 15 inch slim M-LOK free float handguard gives you M-LOK slots for a light, sling mount, bipod or grip. Furniture is a Magpul MOE grip and Magpul MOE SL stock. Black Rain notes that a Magpul MBUS Pro offset front sight may need modification to fit its slim handguards, so plan your backup sights accordingly.
Trigger
Black Rain fits a 3.5 pound drop in trigger, which breaks much lighter and cleaner than a standard mil-spec trigger. That helps with precise shots at distance, but take time to get used to it before using it for defense.
The 5.56 NATO
The 5.56 NATO chamber also fires 223 Remington, so you can shoot inexpensive practice ammo and premium hunting or defensive loads in the same rifle. It is the most common rifle round in America and the standard for home defense, competition and varmint hunting.
Uses
The Black Rain SSP 556 Smoke fits home defense, range work and varmint hunting. Add a red dot or a low power variable optic to the flat top upper and a weapon light on the M-LOK rail and it is ready for the range or the house.
Finish and Care
Smoke is a light gray Cerakote that resists corrosion, scratches and solvents better than paint. Clean the bolt carrier group and chamber every few hundred rounds, keep the BCG lightly oiled, and wipe the finish after handling.
State Laws
AR rifles and 30 round magazines are restricted or banned in some states, including California, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois, Washington and Colorado for magazines. Check your state and local laws before you buy. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.
