The Bullet That Owns 1000 Yards in a 308

A 308 Winchester bullet drops below the speed of sound somewhere around 900 to 1000 yards. That transition is where groups traditionally fall apart, because the shock wave detaching from the nose can destabilize a bullet that was flying perfectly a hundred yards earlier. The Juggernaut was designed specifically to survive it.

Berger achieves that with a long secant-blended ogive and a boat tail proportioned to keep the centre of pressure well forward of the centre of gravity even as velocity bleeds off. The G7 form factor of 0.98 tells the story: a value below 1.0 means the bullet is more efficient than the reference projectile, which very few 30 caliber bullets manage. The Berger 308 Win 185gr Juggernaut OTM Tactical carries a G7 ballistic coefficient of 0.283, the best of the three 308 loads in this lineup.

Velocity is 2608 feet per second from a 26 inch barrel for 2794 foot-pounds at the muzzle. Notice that this beats the 185 grain Classic Hunter by 76 feet per second in the same bullet weight: the OTM Tactical load runs a slightly stiffer charge because the bullet is not asked to expand.

At 300 yards the Berger 308 Win 185gr Juggernaut OTM Tactical is still moving 2152 feet per second with 1903 foot-pounds, and the trajectory with a 200 yard zero puts it 8.73 inches low at 300 and 24.98 inches low at 400. Those are workable numbers for a dialed scope out to the transonic limit.

Minimum twist is 1:12 or faster. Most factory 308 barrels are 1:12 or 1:10 and will stabilize this bullet, but a 1:14 barrel, which does turn up on older varmint rifles, will not. Check before ordering a case. Maximum overall length is 2.810 inches, so it feeds from standard and AICS magazines.

Buy the Berger 308 Win 185gr Juggernaut OTM Tactical if you shoot a 308 at 800 yards and beyond, in High Power, F-TR or a precision rifle series. This is the load that makes the cartridge competitive at distances where most 308 ammunition has given up.

Skip it in favour of the 175 grain OTM if your matches top out around 600 yards and you want a slightly flatter trajectory and marginally less recoil. Below the transonic zone the Juggernaut advantage does not show up.

Skip it entirely for hunting. This is an open tip match bullet with no expansion design. The Classic Hunter loads in 168 and 185 grain are the correct choice for game, and using a match bullet instead wounds animals.
