Description

Berger accuracy in a round that actually fits a hunting rifle magazine is the entire pitch of the Classic Hunter line, and the Berger 308 Win 168gr Classic Hunter is the version most 308 owners should look at first.

A Hybrid Bullet Built to Fit the Magazine
Berger long-range hunting bullets are long, and a long bullet seated where it shoots best often pushes cartridge overall length past what a factory magazine box will take. Owners end up single-feeding or paying a gunsmith. The Classic Hunter design exists to remove that problem entirely.
The nose is shortened and the bearing surface repositioned so the finished round comes in at a maximum overall length of 2.810 inches, comfortably inside 308 Winchester SAAMI spec. The Berger 308 Win 168gr Classic Hunter drops into an unmodified Remington 700, Tikka T3, Savage or Bergara magazine and feeds normally, while keeping the hybrid ogive that makes Berger bullets shoot the way they do.
The compromise is measurable. A G7 ballistic coefficient of 0.251 with a form factor of 1.01 is well behind Berger dedicated long-range hunting bullets. Inside 400 yards, where the overwhelming majority of 308 hunting shots are taken, that difference is academic.
Berger 308 Win 168gr Classic Hunter Specifications
Velocity is 2675 feet per second from a 26 inch test barrel for 2670 foot-pounds at the muzzle. Expect 50 to 100 feet per second less from a 22 inch hunting barrel, which is worth accounting for if you are building a drop chart rather than shooting off a plate. At 300 yards the bullet still carries 1735 foot-pounds, comfortably past what any state requires for deer.
Terminal performance follows the Berger hunting pattern: two to three inches of penetration before the jacket opens, then rapid expansion and fragmentation through the vitals. That delayed onset puts the energy inside the animal rather than on the hide, and it produces dramatic results on deer-sized game. It also means the Berger 308 Win 168gr Classic Hunter is not the bullet for a heavy shoulder shot on elk, where a Partition or a bonded bullet is the honest choice.
Minimum twist is 1:13 or faster, which every factory 308 barrel meets by a wide margin. There is no stability question with this load in any rifle you are likely to own.

Honest Notes on This Load
Buy the Berger 308 Win 168gr Classic Hunter if you hunt deer with a factory 308 and suspect your rifle can shoot tighter than your current ammunition allows. This is the load for someone who wants match-grade consistency without changing anything about the rifle.
Skip it if you shoot a custom rifle with a long magazine and take shots past 600 yards. Berger Elite Hunter and Long Range Hybrid Target bullets have meaningfully better ballistic coefficients and your rifle can feed them.
Skip it for elk and moose. A 308 with a rapid-fragmentation bullet is a marginal combination on animals that size, and there are better tools for that job in the same rifle.
Same bullet family, bigger case: the Berger 300 Win Mag 185gr Classic Hunter. For extreme distance, the Berger 300 Norma Mag 215gr Hybrid Target is the competition option. Berger publishes complete 308 Classic Hunter ballistic data on its own site.
MAG5 Firearms stocks Berger match and hunting ammunition. If you are unsure whether a longer Berger will feed from your magazine, send us the rifle model before you order.
