Description
The Bergara BMR Steel 17 HMR is a compact, accurate bolt-action rimfire built on a micro version of the B-14 action. This configuration (Bergara model BMR005, UPC 043125110131) pairs a 20-inch matte blued steel barrel with a gray and black speckled synthetic stock, and it ships with both a 5-round and a 10-round detachable magazine.
Bergara BMR Steel 17 HMR Overview
Bergara designed the BMR for shooters who love the feel of the B-14 but want a lighter, handier rifle for small game, plinking and youth shooters. It weighs about 5.8 pounds, the barrel is threaded for a suppressor, and the receiver is drilled and tapped for easy optic mounting. The steel barrel adds a little heft up front that helps steady the rifle for precise shots.
Match Chamber Accuracy
Every BMR barrel has a match chamber, cut to tight tolerances for precise bullet alignment. Combined with the quality of a Bergara barrel, that gives this rimfire rifle the kind of accuracy usually found on much more expensive guns, so small targets at 50 yards are well within reach.
Micro B-14 Action
The BMR action has the same look and smooth feel as the full-size B-14, scaled down for rimfire cartridges. The bolt runs quietly, the safety is easy to reach, and the trigger breaks cleanly for good shot placement.
Flat-Shooting 17 HMR
The 17 HMR launches light, fast bullets at more than 2,500 feet per second, so it shoots remarkably flat out to 150 yards and beyond. It is a favorite for squirrels, prairie dogs, groundhogs and small predators, with very little recoil or noise. The 1:9 twist suits the common 17 and 20 grain loads.
Two Detachable Magazines
Each rifle includes a slim 5-round detachable magazine that sits flush for carry and a 10-round detachable magazine for longer range sessions. The magazines work across BMR rifles in 22 LR, 22 WMR and 17 HMR, so you can share spares between rifles of the same caliber.
A Great First Rifle
Its compact size, light weight and mild report make the BMR an excellent rifle for teaching new and young shooters. Start at short range with a large target, focus on safe handling and a smooth trigger press, and keep sessions short and fun so the lessons stick.
Threaded Barrel and Suppressors
The threaded barrel accepts a rimfire suppressor where legal, which makes the BMR even quieter and more pleasant to shoot. When a suppressor is not attached, keep the thread protector installed to guard the threads and crown.
Choosing a Scope
A 2-7x or 3-9x rimfire scope in low rings is a great match for this rifle. Zero at 50 yards, then check your holdovers at 25 and 75 yards so you know exactly where to aim at different distances.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Rimfire ammunition leaves more fouling than centerfire, so clean the bolt face, extractor and chamber regularly. Many rimfire barrels shoot best slightly fouled, so only scrub the bore when accuracy starts to fall off.
Safe Storage at Home
Store the rifle unloaded in a locked safe or cabinet with ammunition kept separately, and teach everyone in the household basic safety rules.
