Description
The Bergara B-14R Carbon is a full-size 22 LR trainer built to feel like a centerfire precision rifle. This configuration (Bergara B14R002, UPC 043125015320) pairs an 18-inch No. 6 carbon fiber wrapped barrel with the Bergara HMR stock, a 1:16 twist, and a 10-round AICS-pattern magazine.
Bergara B-14R Carbon Overview
Bergara designed the B-14R so shooters can practice with inexpensive rimfire ammunition on a rifle that matches the size, weight and controls of their centerfire gun. It shares the footprint of the B-14 and Remington 700 short action, so it fits many of the same stocks, chassis and scope bases. That makes it a favorite for NRL22 and PRS rimfire matches, as well as for anyone who wants an accurate rimfire precision rifle for the backyard range.
Carbon Fiber Barrel
The carbon fiber barrel keeps a stiff, heavy profile while trimming weight from the front of the rifle, and it cools quickly during long strings of fire. The muzzle is threaded for a suppressor, and the 1:16 twist rate is a proven match for standard 22 LR bullet weights. At about 8.1 pounds and 38 inches long, the rifle balances well on a bipod or a barricade.
HMR Stock
The Bergara HMR stock is the same design used on the centerfire B-14 HMR. It has an integral mini-chassis for a solid action interface, an adjustable cheek piece and length of pull, and a vertical style grip. Because the dimensions match the centerfire stock, your cheek weld and hand position feel the same when you switch between rifles.
Floating Bolt and AICS Magazine
A floating bolt head with a non-rotating gas shield helps the action run smoothly and consistently. The single stack AICS magazine is built to the same outside dimensions as a short action AICS centerfire magazine, so you can practice reloads and use the same pouches you carry in competition.
Training With a Rimfire
A 22 LR trainer lets you rehearse positional shooting, wind calls and trigger control for a fraction of the cost of centerfire ammunition. Many shooters set the rifle up as a clone of their main rig with the same optic and bipod, then shoot it at 50 to 200 yards to build skills that carry over to the big gun.
Choosing Ammunition
Rimfire precision rifles often show a strong preference for certain loads. Try several standard velocity match lots and pick the one that groups best at 50 yards. Buying a full case of a good lot keeps your data consistent for an entire season.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Clean the bolt face and chamber regularly to prevent fouling build-up, and only clean the bore when accuracy starts to fall off, since many rimfire barrels shoot best when slightly fouled. Keep a light coat of oil on the bolt and check action screw torque now and then.
Safe Storage at Home
Store the rifle unloaded in a locked safe or cabinet with ammunition kept separately. Teach everyone in the household basic safety rules, and use a cable lock for travel.
Setting Up Your Rifle
Start by mounting a quality scope in rings sized to give a solid cheek weld with the comb adjusted. Set the length of pull so your trigger finger lands naturally on the shoe, then add a bipod or rear bag. Zero at 50 yards, record your come-ups at 25 yard steps out to 200, and keep that data card in your stock pack for match day.
