Description
The Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus in Mossy Oak Bottomland with a 28 inch barrel, part number J42XU18, is the pass-shooting version of Beretta’s waterfowl gun. Two extra inches over the 26 inch build lengthen the sighting plane and add forward weight, which is what a hunter wants when birds are crossing high rather than dropping into a hole.
Chamber is 3.5 inches, capacity is two plus one, and the barrel is Steelium Plus with a 7×7 stepped rib, a steel mid-bead, and a fiber optic front sight.
When the longer barrel is the right call
Barrel length on a waterfowl gun is a question about the shot you take most often. If your birds are feet-down at fifteen yards in flooded timber, a short barrel is quicker and easier to handle in tight cover. If you are shooting divers crossing a point, or geese working a field at thirty-five yards, the longer barrel keeps the swing moving and gives you more sight radius to work with.
On a gun this heavy, the extra weight up front is not a penalty. It steadies the muzzle against the tendency to stop the gun, which is the single most common miss on a crossing bird, and it soaks up a little more recoil in the bargain.
Recoil systems, camouflage, and controls
Three systems handle the 3.5 inch loads: the Blink gas action spreading the impulse, the Kick-Off Mega stock with hydraulic dampers, and a soft comb protecting the cheek. The combination is what makes a full morning of magnum shells something you can do without paying for it the next day.
The Mossy Oak Bottomland finish is the old-growth pattern of wet bark and mud, which still hides a gun better than newer schemes in timber and swamp. Controls are built for cold: an enlarged loading port, an extended charging handle, an oversized bolt release, and a rubberized fore-end grip. The safety is reversible, the stock takes shims for drop and cast, and five extended Optima HP Black chokes are included.

- Bottomland camouflage, still the best answer for flooded timber and mud.
- Three recoil systems working together on a 3.5 inch magnum gun.
- Oversized controls that stay usable with wet gloves in January.
- Five extended choke tubes and an adjustable shim system in the box.
Who it suits
This is the choice for a waterfowler who shoots more birds at distance than over the toes of their waders: divers on a point, geese in a field, ducks working the edge of open water. It doubles as a turkey gun. The 28 inch barrel is a little long inside a tight timber hole or a small boat blind, where the 26 inch build handles better, and neither version is a gun to carry on an upland walk. For open-water and field work, this is the one.

Shells, chokes, and transfer notes
Shotshell dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI, and the 3.5 inch chamber takes 2 3/4, 3, and 3.5 inch shells with no adjustment. Federal law requires non-toxic shot for waterfowl, so steel, bismuth, or a tungsten alloy is what goes in the field. Steel runs safely through the improved cylinder and modified extended tubes supplied with the gun, and should not go through a tighter tube that is not rated for it. For practice, ordinary 2 3/4 inch lead target loads cycle fine and cost far less.
Timber hunters working tight holes will handle the 26 inch Bottomland build better, and hunters who prefer a vision-science camouflage pattern should compare the Optifade Timber version. Every long gun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer and background check, and Pennsylvania buyers should plan on the state point of contact check at pickup.
