Description

The Beretta 686 Sporting in 12 gauge, part number J686S1232, is the long barrelled fixed stock build of Beretta’s clays over and under. Barrels are 32 inches, blued with a vent rib, chambers are 3 inches, and the receiver is steel with silver engraving. The top rib is the wider 10 by 6 millimetre tapered sporting profile rather than the field rib, and the barrels are joined by a vented middle rib that sheds heat over a long round.

The stock is Grade 2 walnut with a fixed comb, a 14.38 inch length of pull and an Extralight pad. Five flush Optima-Choke HP tubes ship in the case and the trigger is the single selective inertia unit.

What 32 inches buys, and what it costs

Two more inches of barrel puts more weight further from the hands, and that inertia is what stops a swing from decelerating as the trigger breaks. On long crossers and true pairs it is the single most useful thing you can add to a gun.

The sighting plane grows with it, so a small pointing error shows up as a visible misalignment rather than as a mystery miss.

The cost is start up. A 32 inch gun takes marginally longer to get moving, which matters on a fast rabbit or a close quartering pair.

Most shooters who move from 30 to 32 inches never move back. Most who go the other way were shooting presentations that punished the length.

What the Beretta 686 Sporting brings to the station

The 10 by 6 tapered rib gives a wider, flatter sighting plane than the field rib, which makes the picture easier to repeat across a round.

The vented middle rib is functional. Barrels get hot over fifty targets and rising heat distorts the view down the rib if there is nowhere for it to escape.

The low profile boxlock, conical locking lugs and replaceable shoulders are what keep 680 series actions tight through decades of heavy round counts.

A fixed comb is lighter, stiffer and one less thing to check between stations, which suits a shooter whose dimensions already match the standard stock.

Shotshell dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI, and the 3 inch chambers accept 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells, though clays shooting is 2 3/4 inch work. Standard 1 1/8 ounce target loads are the practice shell, and Browning BXD Upland in 5 shot covers the days you take it hunting. Do not dry fire it without snap caps, and let the barrels cool between rounds in warm weather.

Shooters who want comb adjustment on the same barrels should compare the 32 inch B-Fast build, the 30 inch is the handier option, left handed shooters should look at the left hand build, and the small bores are here in 20 gauge and 28 gauge.

Why it is worth considering

  • Thirty two inch barrels, the length that keeps a swing honest on long crossers.
  • A 10 by 6 tapered sporting rib, wider and flatter than the field rib.
  • A vented middle rib, so heat mirage does not blur the sight picture late in a round.
  • Five flush chokes in the case, so the gun covers more than one presentation out of the box.
  • The 680 series boxlock, an action that stays tight through heavy round counts.

Who it suits

This suits a sporting clays or trap shooter who wants length and momentum and who already fits a standard stock. Anyone who needs comb height adjustment should buy the B-Fast version of the same gun, and anyone who shoots a lot of close, fast presentations will prefer the 30 inch. Every long gun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer.
